Originally an honor guard of officers and ex-officers of the Army and Navy who came together to stand guard over the remains of President Abraham Lincoln. The Illinois Commandery was formed in 1879 in Chicago and met about 9 times a year.

They also held memorial ceremonies each year on the anniversary of Lincoln's death. Many of their research papers and Civil War anecdotes were published and are deposited with the Chicago Historical Society.
