Thomas Moore, Irish poet and composer.

From the guide to the Thomas Moore manuscript material : 254 items, 1811-1846, (The New York Public Library. Carl H. Pforzheimer Collection of Shelley and His Circle.)

Author Thomas Moore was born in Dublin to Catholic parents, and educated at Trinity College, where he befriended Robert Emmet. His translation of some odes in imitation of Anacreon brought him some powerful supporters, and while enjoying society he continued to write, chiefly poetry and biography, but also novels, short stories, and history. An accomplished musician, he was asked to write lyrics to Irish folk-song melodies, and produced several volumes of A Selection of Irish Melodies; along with his friend Lord Byron, he was a popular poet of his day. He is perhaps best remembered for his monumental biography of Byron, still a standard work, despite his selective editing and burning of Byron's letters.
