William Henry Seward, U.S. senator and Secretary of State (under Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson); son of Dr. Samuel and Mary (Jennings) Seward, married Frances Miller; law practice and residence in Auburn, N.Y.; New York Governor, 1838-1842, and member of the U.S. Senate, 1849-1868; negotiated purchase of Alaska in 1867.
