Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) was born in Dublin on 30 September 1852. He attended Trinity College, Cambridge, where he became the organist, and studied music in Germany. He was Professor of Composition and Orchestral Playing at the Royal College of Music, London, 1887-1924, and conductor of the Bach Choir, London, 1885-1902. Stanford composed seven symphonies for orchestra, and was a prolific writer of chamber music. He was knighted in 1902, and died in Cambridge on 29 March 1924.
