American author and editor John Neal was born in Maine and raised as a Quaker, although he broke with the church at a young age due to his fighting. A career as a merchant was bankrupted by the War of 1812, and he turned to literature, joining Baltimore's Delphian Club. He served as editor of various journals, and wrote long, complexly-plotted adventure novels, as well as critical essays, always seeking to promote American literature. While living in England, he wrote a long series of articles published in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, essentially telling a history of American literature, which helped change the perception of American art in Great Britain. Back in America, he used his popularity and influence to support young writers such as Poe and Whittier.
Novelist, poet, journalist, architect, art critic, attorney, feminist, and businessman; born in Portland, Me.

Pinkney, Edward Coote, 1802-1828. Papers of Edward Coote Pinkney [manuscript], 1821-1826, 1923-1926.
Title:
Papers of Edward Coote Pinkney [manuscript], 1821-1826, 1923-1926.
The collection contains a manuscript draft of "Craven notice" posted in Baltimore against John Neal who had refused Pinkney's challenge of a duel to vindicate the memory of Pinkney's father whom Neal had slandered in his book "Randolph." The collection also contains manuscripts of the poem "The Lady's song" about the death of a loved one; a poem beginning "I know that perfect self-esteem...;" and a facsimile of a portion of "Rodolph." In correspondence (typed and photocopies) Pinkney acknowledges an error in conduct towards Captain Charles G. Ridgely, reports for military duty, sends poems for publication, requests to send written deposition rather than travel to a court-martial, and submits papers in a larceny case. Georgiana McCausland Pinkney's album contains poems by Pinkney, magazine photographs of Pinkney and his father, verses attributed to T.H. Chivers, and a clipping of an article by Lewis Chase on Chivers. There are also photocopies of a clemency appeal to the Governor of Maryland, Pinkney's obituary, a Pinkney crest, and an 1828 new year's greeting to subscribers of The Marylander. Modern correspondence discusses Thomas Ollive Mabbott's and Frank Pleadwell's biography of Pinkney and the possibility that a poem in Pinkney's album signed "C" is by T.H. Chivers.

Nichols, Mary Sargeant Gove, 1810-1884. Mary Sargeant Gove Nichols letters to Alonzo Lewis [manuscript], 1848-1859, undated.
Title:
Mary Sargeant Gove Nichols letters to Alonzo Lewis [manuscript], 1848-1859, undated.
Over the course of 11 years, Nichols writes to her dear friend Alonzo Lewis about poetry, her life, and career as an author. The letters are typically very stream-of-consciousness, and Nichols often delves into issues of religion, including her conversion to Roman Catholicism, family, and the ways in which Lewis is "truly a poet." Briefly mentions Anna Bishop, Sarah Jane Lipppincott Clarke (Grace Greenwood), Rufus Wilmot Griswold, Jenny Lind, Herman Melville, John Godfrey Saxe, [Richard Henry?] Stoddard, and Nathaniel Willis. Includes a poem, written as a valentine, entitled "The rose and the ray." Collection also contains a letter from J. E. Worcester sending a dictionary.

Shepheard, Edward Blackmore. [Journal], 1834 Apr-Sep.
Title:
[Journal], 1834 Apr-Sep.
Holograph journal of Shepheard's five-month trip from England to New York and Lower Canada (Ontario) in the spring and summer of 1834. The volume chronicles his almost eight-week passage to New York on the Cato; sightseeing in and around New York City, including an excursion to Passaic on the new railroad; and travel up the Hudson River and over the Erie Canal to Niagara Falls. Shepheard is particularly interested in American customs and institutions, visiting the financial district, markets, churches and religious settlements, and prisons, and frequently commenting on or correcting Mrs. Trollope's recent Domestic Manners of the Americans. The scenic beauty of upstate New York and Niagara Falls are extensively described; Shepheard quotes Cooper, Byron, and the American poet John Neal at length in these entries. Arriving in Toronto during the height of a cholera epidemic, he discusses the tense political situation and the mayor William Lyon Mackenzie; social and business meetings with the colony's governor Sir John Colbourne; the high cost of living in the town; and his own Loyalist opinions. He also describes his injuries from the collapse of an upper gallery during a political meeting on July 26 and his slow recuperation. The final section of the journal details Shepheard's "voyage of discovery" to the head of Lake Simcoe and portage to Lake Huron, including frontier living conditions, contact and trade with local Indians, and his attempts to hunt and fish. Shepheard concludes the diary with his return to Toronto and his taking of the oath of loyalty, within earshot of Niagara Falls.

Title:
United States Sanitary Commission records. Army and Navy Claim Agency archives 1861-1870
The United States Sanitary Commission established the Army and Navy Claim Agency (ANCA) in Washington, D.C. on April 1, 1864 to serve as the USSC’s central office to assist Union soldiers, sailors, and their families in prosecuting claims on the federal government for pensions, back pay, bounty, commutation of rations, prize money, and other benefits, without cost. The Army and Navy Claim Agency Archives comprise the records of the Army and Navy Claim Agency; the records of the Pension Agency, its predecessor organization; the registers and cash books of its subsidiary local agencies; and the records of two quasi-independent USSC claim agencies whose origins predate the establishment of the Army and Navy Claim Agency: the Protective War Claim Association of the State of New York, located in New York City, and the Protective War Claim and Pension Agency, located in Philadelphia.
