James A. Jones, author and editor, was born in Tisbury, Mass. in 1791.

Jones's childhood was influenced by the neighboring Gaylord Indians from whom he learned a variety of legends. He later incorporated many of these stories into his major published work Traditions of the North American Indians, or Tales of an Indian Camp (1829). Jones lived in England from 1829 to 1831 and returned to the U.S. where he eventually edited papers in Baltimore and Buffalo. He died in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1854.
