William Jay Smith was born April 22, 1918, in Winnfield, LA. He followed a career as a writer and teacher in English. He is best known as a poet, both for adults and children, and has received awards and honors for his portry. He also worked as a translator, being fluent in French and Italian, and also familiar with Spanish and Russian. Smith served as Writer-in-Residence at Hollins University (Roanoke, Va.) during the 1965-66 session and as a Faculty member of the English Dept. 1967-1980. He left Hollins to take the position of Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress (a position now called Poet Laureate) from 1968-1970. Poet and translator, Smith has written poetry for both adults and children.

William Jay Smith is a poet, scholar, and translator. Praised for his diverse poetic output, his virtuoso style, and his innovation, Smith has been influential on a maturing generation of new poets. He also has an impressive academic record, including a stint as poetry consultant at the Library of Congress, a position as poetry reviewer at Harper's, and numerous appointments as poet-in-residence at various universities. He also served one term in the Vermont House of Representatives.
