Author and scholar John Burroughs was born and raised on a farm in upstate New York, where he developed a love for nature and pursued what education he could. In 1863 he moved to Washington, D.C. where he worked for the Dept. of the Treasury, and befriended Walt Whitman. Influenced by Emerson and the transcendentalists, he wrote many essays, chiefly about nature or philosophy, as well as literary criticism, poetry, and numerous books, and he became among the most popular and influential writers of his day.
