Sir John Franklin, a noted polar explorer, was Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen's Land between 1837 and 1843. His second wife, Jane Griffen, whom he married in 1828, travelled extensively in Australia, and visited Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and New Zealand.
