Elizabeth Gurney was born in Norwich in May 1780 a devout Quaker she married Joseph Fry in 1800. After a visit to Newgate prison in 1813 she became an advocate for prison reform establishing a school and chapel for the female prisoners and touring the country visiting other prisons. She died in 1845
