Wikipedia, October 25, 2022
Standard Oil Company, Inc.,[6] was an American oil production, transportation, refining, and marketing company that operated from 1870 to 1911. At its height, Standard Oil was the largest petroleum company in the world, and its success made its co-founder and chairman, John D. Rockefeller, one of the wealthiest Americans of all time[7][8] and one of the richest people in modern history.[9][10] Its history as one of the world's first and largest multinational corporations ended in 1911, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that it was an illegal monopoly. The company was founded in 1863 by Rockefeller and Henry Flagler, and was incorporated in 1870.[11] Standard Oil dominated the oil products market initially through horizontal integration in the refining sector, then, in later years vertical integration; the company was an innovator in the development of the business trust. The Standard Oil trust streamlined production and logistics, lowered costs, and undercut competitors. "Trust-busting" critics accused it of using aggressive pricing to destroy competitors and form a monopoly that threatened other businesses.

Green, Donald A., 1905-. Oral history interview with Donald A. Green and Willard C. Asbury 9 December 1985
Title:
Oral history interview with Donald A. Green and Willard C. Asbury 9 December 1985
Peter Morris starts this interview by asking Donald Green and Willard Asbury about the early years at Standard Oil Development Company and the influence of Frank Howard and Eger Murphree. The arc process is discussed as well as the level of assistance obtained from IG Farben; Green and Asbury recall the IG research organization. The wartime pressures during the development of GR-S, and the problems at the Baton Rouge plant are discussed by Green, while Asbury tells of his visit to Germany with the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey. The political recriminations of the prewar cooperation between Standard Oil and IG Farben are recollected as are visits to Germany in the 1930s and 1950s. The interview ends with a survey of the postwar move into chemicals, the Ziegler process and the future of the oil and petrochemical industries.

American Association of Advertising Agencies Records, 1918-1998
Title:
American Association of Advertising Agencies Records, 1918-1998
The American Association of Advertising Agencies, founded in 1917, is the primary advertising industry trade organization. The American Association of Advertising Agencies (AAAA) Records span the years 1918-1998 and include correspondence, annual corporate and stockholder reports for member agencies, meeting minutes and speeches, biographical summaries, a subject file, and videotapes that document selected activities and functions of the organization. The collection has been compiled from a number of accessions received over time, and so does not represent a comprehensive archive of the AAAA. Certain aspects of AAAA activities, however, are well represented, including a set of card files that document the professional careers of AAAA members over a 50-year period, and subject files that focus on Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigations into complaints lodged against advertisers and advertising claims produced in a variety of media, with a particular emphasis on the ways that products were advertised during and in conjunction with children's television programming. Other topics touched on include advertising self-regulation, antitrust issues, advertising laws, and deceptive and ethical practices in marketing and advertising.

Sun Company. Records, 1889-1984.
Title:
Records, 1889-1984.
The Sun Company records document the history of the company from its origins in the 1880s through the 1968 Sunray DX merger. The records make it clear that Sun was a classic family-managed firm and very tightly controlled by the Pews. The records, reflecting this pre-modern corporate structure, contain a mixture of personal and business materials. Record Group I, in fact, comprises the business papers of the various members of the Pew family who played important roles within the company. The production records are derived, for the most part, from the office of J. Edgar Pew; refining records were generated by Robert C. Pew and Arthur E. Pew, Jr.; and management records come from the offices of Joseph Newton Pew and J. Howard Pew.

Sperry, Elmer Ambrose, 1860-1930. Diesel engine papers, 1908-1929.
Title:
Diesel engine papers, 1908-1929.
Elmer Sperry's files on the compound diesel engine and the electric transmission include a number of blueprints and patent diagrams describing his diesel engine and proposed electronic transmission. During the 1920s Sperry collaborated closely with H. C. Snow, an engineer with the Velie Motors Corporation of Moline, Illinois, and the collection includes a complete file of their letters. These records show that in spite of their efforts the diesel project was both a technological and financial failure. Sperry could not develop a working model nor could he raise the capital required to finance research and development in this area. For a while Ford Motor Company, Standard Oil, Baldwin Locomotive Works, and the Illinois Central Railroad expressed interest in Sperry's work but, when research and development did not proceed as rapidly as expected, they quickly withdrew their support.

Title:
Carnegie Estate business records, 1886-1959 (bulk 1900-1920).
Despite their individual unimportance, the records in bulk represent about half of the collection and document the intricacies of daily life on the Carnegie Estate on Cumberland Island, especially at Dungeness, Stafford, Greyfield, and Plum Orchard. What exists here are not the lives of the Carnegies but the life of an Estate they had created and which, for a while, took on a life of its own. Cancelled checks and disbursement vouchers were not saved, nor are invoices for every year complete. Major sets of records cover the Cumberland Route steamboat line, the Drew stationers, H.E. Dotterer, Standard Oil Company, and Western Union Telegraph Company.

Title:
James K. Jones papers, 1900-1921 [manuscript].
Legal, political, and business correspondence (including 21 letterpress copybooks) of James Kimbrough Jones; and of his son, J. K. Jones, Jr. (1867-1922), lawyer for oil pipeline companies. The collection covers only the last years of the elder Jones's political career but includes letters from prominent national and Arkansas Democrats. The bulk of the papers concerns the oil industry in Oklahoma and other states. The Joneses represented developers seeking to lease government and Indian lands and appeared before Congress, executive agencies, the Interstate Commerce Commission, and federal courts for oil pipeline firms, most of which were connected with the Standard Oil Company. Also included are papers relating to other business interests: oil in Wyoming, Utah, Kansas, and Texas; Nevada gold mines; railroads in Arkansas and other western states; real estate in Arkansas, Texas, and South Dakota; oil and mining in Mexico; and Civil War claims of Arkansas citizens against the federal government. Correspondence includes letters from many prominent early oil entrepreneurs and gives a picture of society in Oklahoma in the early 20th century.

Low Moor Iron Company (Alleghany County, Va.). Papers of the Low Moor Iron Company [manuscript], 1872-1930.
Title:
Papers of the Low Moor Iron Company [manuscript], 1872-1930.
Papers of the Low Moor Iron Company, Alleghany County, Va., producer of pig iron and owner of coal and iron mines and a limestone quarry, contain accounts, annual reports, bills, boarding house books, cash books, check stubs, correspondence, inventories, invoices, order books, payroll books, rent books, scrapbooks, scrip books, time books, blueprints of mechanical drawings, and other operational, financial, and employee records covering all phases of the company operations including coal and iron mining, limestone quarrying, pig iron production, marketing and transportation, and company and employee relations. The papers reflect national economic cycles from the 1880s through the 1930s. They document the company's strained relations with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, the procurement of immigrant labor, the running of company towns and labor difficulties including a 1902 strike. The papers also trace the precipitous decline of the Virginia iron industry in the 1920s caused by transportation difficulties and a shift of iron production to newer fields, and the final dissolution of the company. Also in the papers are two letters from Calvin Coolidge to John Fowle, Jan. 17, and April 18, 1900. Correspondents include Allis Chalmers, American Cyanamid, Atlas Powder, B. F. Goodrich, Borderland Coal, S. G. Cargill, Carnegie Steel, E. I. Dupont de Nemours Powder, Firestone Rubber, Fox Film Corporation, Henry D. Flood, Goodyear Tire and Rubber, General Electric, Hercules Powder, F. U. Humber, John Roebling and Son, Charles Gilmore Maphis, Thomas Staples Martin, E. C. Means, H. G. Myron Bement Smith collection, circa 1910-1970
Title:
Myron Bement Smith collection
The Myron Bement Smith collection consists of two parts, the papers of Myron Bement Smith and his wife Katharine and the Islamic Archives. It contains substantial material about his field research in Italy in the 1920s and his years working on Islamic architecture in Iran in the 1930s. Letters describe the milieu in which he operated in Rochester NY and New York City in the 1920s and early 1930s; the Smiths' life in Iran from 1933 to 1937; and the extensive network of academic and social contacts that Myron and Katharine developed and maintained over his lifetime. The Islamic Archives was a project to which Smith devoted most of his professional life. It includes both original materials, such as his photographs and notes, and items acquired by him from other scholars or experts on Islamic art and architecture. Smith intended the Archives to serve as a resource for scholars interested in the architecture and art of the entire Islamic world although he also included some materials about non-Islamic architecture.

Dominguez Land Corporation. Dominguez Land Corporation Collection, 1911-1950
Title:
Dominguez Land Corporation Collection, 1911-1950
This collection documents the sale of individual plots of land in the city of Torrance, CA. The collection is organized according to contract numbers assigned to each sale by the Dominguez Land Corporation, which they have termed "agreements". Each agreement contains either a contract for the sale of land (residential, business, industrial, oil, or undeveloped land, though later documents are simply noted as "sales contracts" without delineating the type of land being sold) or a grant deed for land, though usually both documents are found in each agreement. The sales contracts include details on mortgage arrangements and restrictions on building (for unimproved properties), as well as ledgers detailing payments made on the property. Each agreement may also contain correspondence relating to the agreement (both hand-written and typed), as well as company memos (generally orders to draw up grant deeds). Finally, additional legal documents, such as quitclaim deeds and affidavits, may be included in the agreements. Within the second series, there are four subseries included. The first subseries includes other land agreements, including the lease agreement between the Dominguez Land Corporation and the Standard Oil Company and the sales agreement between the Dominguez Land Corporation and the Chanslor-Canfield Midway Oil Company, as well as a sales contract with the Pacific Electric Railway Company. Another subseries includes the By-Laws and Articles of Incorporation for both the Dominguez Land Company and the Dominguez Land Corporation. A third subseries details the dissolution and sale of the Dominguez Land Corporation to Remco-Real Estate Management Co., and a fourth subseries includes stockholder and bond holder information on the Dominguez Land Corporation.

Brown Instrument Company. Records, 1925-1960.
Title:
Records, 1925-1960.
The records of the Brown Instrument Company consist of research files documenting the development of measuring instruments and industrial control systems used in continuous process manufacturing. The files trace the evolution of electromechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic devices produced by the Brown Company. Trade catalogs dating from 1910 show that Brown's earliest electric meters were designed to measure and control heat and gases used in continuous firing iron and steel furnaces. By the late 1930s Brown found new markets for these temperature control devices and began producing a millivoltmeter to regulate and control the temperatures under which industrial processes took place. The records show that after World War II Brown experimented with remote control devices similar to those which had been recently developed at M.I.T.'s Servomechanisms Laboratory.
