John J. Carter founded the Carter Oil Compay which later became an affiliate of the Standard Oil Company. The collection contains his correspondence, diary transcripts, diaries and notes which document his life work.

The Carter Oil Company was founded by John Joyce Carter in 1893 in Sisterville, West Virginia. A controlling interest was acquired in 1893 by South Penn Oil Company (later Standard Oil Company of New Jersey). In 1915, headquarters were established in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Carter was born in Ireland in 1842 and emigrated with his sister to the United States and served in the Union army during the Civil War. After the war, John moved to Titusville, Pennsylvania, and opened a clothing store. In 1877 he invested in an oil drilling venture which was very successful. He continued to invest in oil and make a profit, enabling him to buy up other oil property. In 1893, he founded the Carter Oil Company and served as president of that company until his resignation in 1915....
