Bassler, a native of Pennsylvania, graduated from Albright College, Lehigh University and Johns Hopkins University, where he received a Ph. D. in geology in 1913. From 1920 to 1932 he worked for Standard Oil as chief geologist in Peru. As a sideline he collected animal and plant samples there for the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
