Records of farming and agriculture include: bill of sale, 24 Feb. 1799, Edgefield District, S.C., Rice Swearingen, re sale of slave to Mary Swearingen; agreement, 7 Oct. 1823, Edgefield District, S.C., between Eldred Simkins and Moses Swearingen for operation of Simkins' plantation; accounts, 13 Feb. 1835 and 8 Jan. 1836, of Larkin Swearingen with Vaucluse Manufacturing Company for work on plows, cloth, and beef. Document, 21 May 1852, declaring Moses Swearingen an ordained minister at Mount Zion Baptist Church; letter, 25 May 1862, Killiecrankie, Bethany Academy, Liberty Hill, Benjamin Ryan Tillman, to his sister, Anna Tillman Swearingen, re her teaching school and evacuation of Coles Island; letter, 14 June 1899, Clarks Hill, S.C., George D. Tillman to John Eldred Swearingen, re his graduation with first honors and his prospects for success in spite of his blindness.
