Joseph Newton Pew, Sr. (1848-1912) was the founder of the Sun Oil Company and its predecessor natural gas and pipeline companies. J.N. Pew was initially involved in a series of ventures in the oil boomtown of Titusville, Pa. Pew and Edward O. Emerson formed a partnership to speculate in oil leases and to explore the area's natural gas fields. Emerson and Pew founded the Keystone Gas Company in 1881 and the Penn Fuel Company the next year.
