Edgar Allan Poe, whose poetry had been included in Griswold's anthology, published a critical response that questioned which poets were included. This began a rivalry which grew when Griswold succeeded Poe as editor of Graham's Magazine at a salary higher than Poe's. Later, the two competed for the attention of poet Frances Sargent Osgood. They never reconciled their differences, and after Poe's mysterious death in 1849, Griswold wrote an unsympathetic obituary. Claiming to be Poe's chosen literary executor, he began a campaign to harm Poe's reputation that lasted until his own death eight years later.
Griswold considered himself an expert in American poetry and was an early proponent of its inclusion on the school curriculum. He also supported the introduction of copyright legislation, speaking to Congress on behalf of the publishing industry, but he was not above infringing the copyright of other people's work. A fellow editor remarked "even while haranguing the loudest, [he] is purloining the fastest".

Wikipedia entry, "Rufus WIlmot Griswold," viewed 9/13/21
Rufus Wilmot Griswold (February 13, 1815 – August 27, 1857) was an American anthologist, editor, poet, and critic. Born in Vermont, Griswold left home when he was 15 years old. He worked as a journalist, editor, and critic in Philadelphia, New York City, and elsewhere. He built a strong literary reputation, in part due to his 1842 collection The Poets and Poetry of America. This anthology, the most comprehensive of its time, included what he deemed the best examples of American poetry. He produced revised versions and similar anthologies for the remainder of his life, although many of the poets he promoted have since faded into obscurity. Many writers hoped to have their work included in one of these editions, although they commented harshly on Griswold's abrasive character. Griswold was married three times: his first wife died young, his second marriage ended in a public and controversial divorce, and his third wife left him after the previous divorce was almost repealed.

Herman Hooker letters to Rufus W. Griswold [manuscript], 1853.
Hoeker discusses a "notice" of "poor [Horace Binney] Wallace" which he has written and wishes Griswold to publish. Mentions a previous notice published by [Henry N.] Hudson in the "Churchman." He would prefer publication in a pamphlet and describes John Wallace's interest and his wish to be anonymous. He congratuates Griswold on his "good wife." He also sends him a copy of "The planter," a racy book which may not suit.

Mary Elizabeth Hewitt letters to R. W. Griswold [manuscript], 1841 Dec 30 and 18[?] Aug 25.
On Dec 30, 1841, Hewitt writes to apologize for her late response in sending Griswold the desired copies during the time period he requested. She thanks him for the honor of assigning her a place among the "Poets of America," and discusses her difficulty in selecting from her poems. She concludes by responding to Griswold's questions about her maiden name and birthplace. In a second letter, Aug 25, Hewitt hopes Griswold received the packet she sent him noting how difficult it is to live more than three and a half miles from the nearest mail bag and not own a horse or any other animal.

In a letter, 1898 Nov 15,Osgood writes to "My dear Mr. Curtis[?]" describing Mr. Bryant's religious views and character, and embarks upon a personal anecdote about Bryant.

Title:
John Henry Ingram letter to Algernon C. Swinburne [manuscript], 1874 March 9.
Ingram responds to a letter of Swinburne's regarding Poe and "Miss Rosalie." In his "Mirror" article he could not say all he wanted but a better article is soon appearing in the "Temple Bar" magazine. He reports "the South Carolina lady" incident as "a damnable lie of [Rufus W.] Griswolds, but like most of his filthy anecdotes-doubtless grounded upon some floating scandal." Ingram comments on his forthcoming biography based on confidential documents which would effect the "name & fame of a woman still living" and corrects Griswold's errors. He encloses an unfinished poem [not present] which he believes Poe wrote. John Henry Ingram Letter to Algernon C. Swinburne, 1874, Accession #38-135-k, Special Collections, University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
