Rufus Wilmot Griswold (February 13, 1815 – August 27, 1857) was an American anthologist, editor, poet, and critic. Born in Vermont, Griswold left home when he was 15 years old. He worked as a journalist, editor, and critic in Philadelphia, New York City, and elsewhere. He built a strong literary reputation, in part due to his 1842 collection The Poets and Poetry of America. George Wilkins Kendall settled in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1835. In 1837, he and Francis A. Lumsden established the Times-Picayune, a New Orleans newspaper. Kendall participated in the Texan Santa Fé Expedition in 1841 and was subsequently held prisoner in Mexico. During the Mexican War he accompanied United States forces under Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott, reporting war news for the Times-Picayune.
