Throughout its history the University of Pittsburgh has received occasional support from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In the early 1960s it suffered an unprecedented fiscal crisis and sought a solution that linked it to the Commonwealth. On August 23, 1966, House Bill No. 2 of the General Assembly of Pennsylvania was signed and the University officially became state-related.
The United Faculty, an affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers and American Association of University Professors, formed in 1982 at the University of Pittsburgh out of the merger of the Pitt Professional Union and American Association of University Professors, which both lost the right to represent the faculty in collective bargaining negotiations in 1976. Throughout 1984 and 1985, United Faculty and the university were locked in a legal battle over representation issues which resulted in a ruling that stated the union must represent all full-time and part-time faculty members with the exception of the Medical School. In 1987, the union was forced to redirect its organization efforts when it was ruled that full-time professors are managers and therefore not eligible for collective bargaining. The union then put emphasis on part-time professors and librarians which were deemed to be eligible for union representation. A 1991 vote saw faculty and librarians at the university reject the United Faculty as a collective bargaining agent.
The University of Pittsburgh traces its origin back to 1787, when the Pittsburgh Academy was established by Hugh Henry Brackenridge, who got the Pennsylvania legislature to grant land for the school.
The name was changed in 1819 to the Western University of Pennsylvania. The devastating fire that destroyed downtown Pittsburgh (April 10, 1845) also destroyed the university's hall where all the academy and university records, books, files, furniture and scientific equipment were kept. Another fire (April, 1849) destroyed the new building.
Operations were suspended until 1854, when the university reopened after constructing a new building at Ross Street and Diamond (now Forbes Avenue).
In 1882, the university relocated to Allegheny City (now the North Side of Pittsburgh). In 1908 the name was changed to "University of Pittsburgh," and the move to relocate the university to the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh was begun. The centerpiece of the new campus was its neo-Gothic buildings: the Cathedral of Learning (1929); the Stephen Collins Foster Memorial (1937) and Heinz Chapel (1938). The first four Nationality Rooms in the Cathedral were completed in 1938. The University of Pittsburgh is well-known for many of its programs, in particular its Medical Center in the field of transplantation surgery.

Hempel, Carl G. (Carl Gustav), 1905-1997. Papers of Carl Gustav Hempel, 1903-1997.
Title:
Papers of Carl Gustav Hempel, 1903-1997.
The papers originate from Hempel's office at Princeton University. The majority of the material was organized by Hempel according to various filing systems. Whenever possible, the original order has been maintained. The greater part of the papers is in English, but a considerable amount is also in German, and a few items are in French. The papers feature some early, pre-immigration material from Hempel's European period while living in Berlin, Vienna, and Brussels. The majority of the documents, however, stem from his post-immigration period in the U.S. The papers are divided into five series. Hempel's biographical material covers mainly the years 1928 to 1966 and comprises personal and educational records, such as diaries, notebooks, diplomas, and professional records, e.g. curricula vitae and employment correspondence. The correspondence series extends from the 1920s to the 1990s, with the bulk of the material concentrating on the years 1940-1990. The correspondence is subdivided into general correspondence; exchanges between Hempel, Paul Oppenheim, and Kurt Grelling; contacts between Hempel, Oppenheim, and other correspondents; family correspondence; and letters of recommendation, which are currently closed to research access. Documents in the research, lectures and publications series consist of Hempel's research manuscripts and notes, lecture drafts, book inserts, and a variety of material pertaining to his conference participations, contributions, and publications, generally focusing on the years 1950 to 1990. Manuscripts on both the Carus and Gavin David Young lectures are contained in two separate subseries. Hempel's teaching materials include folders he prepared for his graduate and undergraduate classes, in particular at the Universities of Yale, Princeton, and Pittsburgh, mostly covering the years 1949-1985. It also features a few dissertations and administrative documents. Please note that due to the sensitive and confidential nature of some of the material, access to this series is restricted. Finally, the offprints series is divided into offprints authored by Hempel and offprints authored by others. Offprints of others' publications are organized from A-Z according to author. Most of them contain handwritten annotations and dedications to Hempel, and some prominent authors in the field are featured. Some series are divided into subseries.

Day and Klauder. Day and Klauder architectural records, 1895-1958 (bulk 1908-1938).
Title:
Day and Klauder architectural records, 1895-1958 (bulk 1908-1938).
The collection comprises architectural drawings, photographic materials and other records documenting over 200 buildings and projects designed between 1895-1958 by the architectural firm of Day and Klauder or by their predecessor or successor firms. Predecessor firms represented in the collection are Frank Miles Day and Brother; and Day Brothers and Klauder. Successor firms represented are Charles Z. Klauder, architect; Office of Charles Z. Klauder; and Trautwein & Howard, architects. Projects represented in the collection include private commissions, public buildings, and the firm's extensive work for collegiate institutions. Holdings include designs for Concordia Seminary; Cornell University; Drexel & Company; Violet Oakley; Pennsylvania State University; Princeton University; R.R. Donnelley and Sons Company; St. Paul's School; Trinity Church, Wilmington; University of Chicago; University of Colorado at Boulder; University of Delaware; University of Pennsylvania; University of Pittsburgh; Wellesley College; Samuel P. Wetherill (now the Philadelphia Art Alliance); and Yale University. The bulk of the original drawings and prints in the collection were received from John Lloyd, who acquired the office of Trautwein and Howard in the early 1960s. During 1985-1991 he distributed a large number of original architectural drawings to original clients or current owners of the firm's built works. Lloyd gave to the University of Pennsylvania the drawings for buildings at the University, as well as the remaining drawings and other materials he was not able to distribute. An inventory, dated 1958, of drawings held by the office lists drawings done by Klauder himself. Only one of these is found in this collection, an original perspective rendering for the Concordia Seminary, signed and dated by Klauder. The largest portion of the collection consists of photographic materials (photoprints, cyanotype prints and photonegatives, both film and glass plate) which comprehensively document buildings and projects from 1908 to 1938. In addition to a wide array of images documenting the built works, the collection includes a large number of glass plate negatives of the firm's presentation drawings, chiefly renderings by Charles Z. Klauder. These negatives are particularly important because many original drawings by Klauder are not found in this collection and may have been lost or destroyed. The very limited project and office files include an extensive index to the firm's projects and job numbers. Personal materials related to Charles Z. Klauder are limited to photographic documentation of his travel sketches 1895-1925 and photographic documentation of a model built by the architect, ca. 1925. This collection contains no personal materials related to Frank Miles Day. These are found in the Frank Miles Day Collection (Collection #059). This collection also contains documentation for two buildings by Frank Furness (Furness, Evans and Company): Recitation Hall, University of Delaware, 1891 (photoprints); and The National Bank of the Republic, 1883-1884 (photoprints and survey drawings).

Wray, Wendell L. Papers of Wendell L. Wray, 1885-2003.
Title:
Papers of Wendell L. Wray, 1885-2003.
This collection documents Wendell Wray's life and work. It includes a wide variety of materials and formats related to his career and his personal interests. There is often significant overlap between these two broad categories. For instance, Wray not only taught and consulted around oral history, but he explored it as a means of researching his own genealogical circumstances. Wray's interest in both oral culture and the written word are manifested consistently throughout this collection. Significant materials include letters, drafts, articles, photographs, sound recordings, reports, notes for presentations, and a variety of publications. As an African American librarian and scholar, Wray was acutely aware of documenting his own life as part of a larger historical trajectory, and this collection indicates that he was very successful in this endeavor. This collection is only arranged to the series level; there is no individual folder level inventory for this collection at the present time. Please contact the Archives Service Center for more information.

Hercules, David M. Oral history interview with David M. Hercules 2002 March 20
Title:
Oral history interview with David M. Hercules 2002 March 20
David M. Hercules begins his interview by discussing his childhood and education. He describes his youth in Somerset, Pennsylvania, and his childhood curiosity with science. When he was in high school, he continued to develop an interest in chemistry. Harold B. Brumbaugh and his chemistry teacher, William B. Howe, convinced him to attend Juniata College, a liberal arts school in central Pennsylvania which had a well renowned chemistry department. While at Juniata, he honed his interest in analytical chemistry. He was exposed to a few different types of spectroscopy at Juniata, and was able to attend tours of major academic and industrial labs in Pennsylvania and Delaware. He chose to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology [MIT] for graduate school, and selected Lockhart B. Rodgers as his graduate advisor. He did his thesis work about the emission spectra of naphthalene compounds. While at MIT, Hercules worked as a teaching assistant for Stephen G. Simpson. After graduation, Hercules decided to pursue an academic career. Hercules began his professional career at Lehigh University as an assistant professor. He describes how he built a spectroflurometer at Lehigh and did research on photo-induced luminescence. When he worked at Lehigh, he had summer positions at United States Steel Corporation and Sun Oil Company. After three years at Lehigh, he returned to Juniata and conducted undergraduate research. He became an assistant professor at MIT after three years at Juniata. While at MIT, Hercules used a wide array of instrumentation, including one of the first ESCA [electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis] instruments. He corresponded and collaborated with Kai Siegbahn from Uppsala University in Sweden. Hercules used ESCA and XPS [x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy] to investigate a variety of phenomena, including heterogeneous catalysis. He also consulted for the Central Intelligence Agency, Instrumentation Laboratories, W.S. Merrill and Company, and Exxon Mobil Corporation. Hercules moved to the University of Georgia after six years at MIT. He then describes the position of analytical chemistry within the chemistry department and the variety of instrumentation that he was able to work with in Georgia. He continued to be interested in catalysis and attended a International Catalysis Society Meeting in Florida. After receiving a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship, he was able to study at Northwestern University with Robert L. Burwell Jr. To continue his work on catalysis, Hercules moved to the University of Pittsburgh [Pitt] after seven years in Georgia. He got to work with an impressive variety of instrumentation at Pitt, and consulted for W.S. Merrill and Exxon. He helped develop and establish the surface science center at Pitt, and helped recruit John T. Yates Jr. to be the head of it. He used many different types of instrumentation, including SIMS [secondary ion mass spectrometry], ion scattering spectroscopy, and Auger electron spectroscopy. At Pitt, he gained interest in mass spectroscopy and began to consult for Leybold-Heraeus. After that, Hercules worked with a LAMMA [laser microprobe mass analyzer] and the MALDI [matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization] process. He served as chair of the chemistry department for nine years and won the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung Prize. After nineteen years at Pitt, Hercules transitioned to working at Vanderbilt University. He describes the state of the Vanderbilt chemistry department and his place within it. To conclude, Hercules recounts his role in various conferences, including different Gordon Research Conferences [GRC], as well as the Asilomar Conference on Electron Spectroscopy and the Namur conference. He also recalls the funding of the GRC on electron spectroscopy. He ends the interview by reflecting on his current research on polymers using SIMS and MALDI and on the state of analytical chemistry today.

Sellars, Wilfrid. Papers of Wilfrid S. Sellars, 1899-1990.
Title:
Papers of Wilfrid S. Sellars, 1899-1990.
The Papers of Wilfrid S. Sellars reflect the working life of a professional philosopher of science. Focusing on his professional pursuits in researching, writing and teaching from the 1930s through 1987, these files consist of books, correspondence, contracts, course materials, financial records, manuscripts, notes, photographs, publications, and reports. Especially significant are the manuscripts, which range from notes and working drafts in Sellars's own hand to the published articles. Although smaller than the other series, the first series provides researchers with records pertaining to the more personal aspects of Sellars's life. The second, fifth and sixth series document the various stages of researching, writing, and editing of manuscripts employed by Sellars. The third series emphasizes Sellars's academic duties as a philosophy professor from 1938 to 1987. The fourth series highlights Sellars's contributions to the philosophy community as an editor, consultant, and lecturer, which compliment his duties as an author and professor. The seventh series documents the career of Sellars's father, Roy Wood Sellars, which is included because of the close personal and professional interactions between them.

Title:
Robert Colodny Papers Bulk, 1960-1995 1937-2002, (Bulk 1960-1995)
Robert Colodny (1915-1997) fought with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in the Spanish Civil War. He returned to the U.S. in 1938 with a severe head injury. He recovered and served in with the U.S. Army in Alaska during World War II. Colodny received his Ph.D. in history and philosophy in 1950 and joined the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh in 1959. In 1961, a Pennsylvania State representative accused Colodny of being a Communist sympathizer, jeopardizing his faculty position at the University of Pittsburgh. After a HUAC hearing and a University inquiry, Colodny was cleared and his position secured. This collection documents Colodny’s writings from World War II; his work as a writer and editor of academic, political and historical material; his correspondence and activities with the Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigades (VALB); and his lifelong involvement in a range of progressive causes.

Title:
Cynthia Sutherland papers, 1963-1997 (bulk, 1983-1995).
The Cynthia Sutherland Papers document a portion of Sutherland's life from 1963-1997. A vast majority of the collection is comprised of academic course materials that were used for the instruction of English Literature and Women's Studies classes at the University of Pittsburgh from 1981-1996. While the collection does not include documents from every course she taught, the materials are representative of the variety of subjects, from broad to specific, that interested Sutherland, and were considered appropriate for academic study by the English and Women's Studies departments at the University of Pittsburgh. Common themes include: Elizabethan through eighteenth-century drama, modern drama, myth studies, folklore, children's literature, fantasy and science fiction literature, psychoanalysis and identity, representations of women in literature, and the influence of women authors on drama and literature. In addition to course materials, a research examination from her PhD studies and a selection of personal and professional correspondence reflect similar subject interests that Sutherland carried throughout her academic career and beyond the collegiate classroom.

Title:
George P. Garrett Papers, 1929-2008 (bulk 1960-2000)
George P. Garrett (1929-2008) was a poet, editor, author, and professor of English. The papers of George P. Garrett span the years 1929 to 2000 with the bulk of the material being dated between 1960 and 1990. The papers were initially collected and assembled by author, bibliographer, and publisher Stuart T. Wright. Wright published a number of Garrett's works at his Palaemon Press and also assembled the Stuart Wright Bibliographic Collection of George Garrett (see related materials held by the Rubenstein Library). Additional materials were received by the Library directly from George Garrett. The papers document Garrett's literary career as an author of novels, short stories, poetry, and dramatic works (including filmscripts) and the tremendous influence he had as an English professor and an editor on an entire generation of writers, particularly in the South. Correspondence with numerous authors, publishers, and educators offers much information about the history of 20th-century Southern literature, publishing, and literary education. The collection is divided into the Writings Series (with subseries of Writings by Garrett, Writings Edited by Garrett, Writings by Others, and Proofs); the Correspondence Series (with 5 subseries of alphabetically and chronologically arranged correspondence); the Audiovisual Material Series; and the Miscellaneous Papers Series.

Shapiro, Alvin P. (Alvin Philip), 1920-. Alvin P. Shapiro papers, 1942-1998.
Title:
Alvin P. Shapiro papers, 1942-1998.
The Alvin P. Shapiro Papers document the pursuit of medical research into the causes and treatment of hypertension. Shapiro was an active physician and medical researcher from his time in the U.S. Army in the late 1940s through his tenure at the University of Pittsburgh's medical school, which ended upon his death in the late 1990s. His papers include research data as well as published and unpublished abstracts, discussions, and manuscript materials, through which changes in theories and research processes can be seen. The development of hypertension research is notably evident when examining draft revisions of articles and peer-review comments from submissions to scholarly medical journals. Shapiro's work focused predominantly on how stress and other psychosomatic factors can affect blood pressure and also examinations of renal function and hypertension related to systemic scleroderma. The evolution, efficacy, and side effects of treatments for hypertension, including pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments, are also prominent themes in this collection. His role as a medical educator also shaped Shapiro's research interests. This collection includes scholarly works that examine and critique medical education in the United States in the 1970s. There are also many pieces, generally written for local Pittsburgh medical community newsletters, in which Shapiro reflects on his personal experiences as a doctor, researcher, educator, and patient. Shapiro's time as a military physician during World War II is also represented. Conspicuously missing from the Shapiro Papers are published manuscript materials from his early career - from the 1950s through 1970. It is unclear why these documents are not a part of this collection. There are, however, unpublished materials, and materials related to published abstracts and discussions from this time period.

Mulkearn, Lois. Research files of Lois Mulkearn, 1937-1956.
Title:
Research files of Lois Mulkearn, 1937-1956.
The collection consists of manuscript drafts, topic notes, transcripts, and correspondence collected by Lois Mulkearn, the first librarian at the University of Pittsburgh's Darlington Memorial Library. A portion of the materials is related to the book A Traveler's Guide to Historic Western Pennsylvania, written by Lois Mulkearn and Edwin V. Pugh and published by the University of Pittsburgh Press in 1954. The notes and manuscript drafts for the book are arranged by topics relating to the subject of the book, namely histories of various locations in Western Pennsylvania. Additional materials consist of transcripts of court cases involving George Mason of the Ohio Company, which was founded in 1747 and represented the trading and land prospecting interests of a handful of Virginia planters, and settlers who were in debt to the company. The cases are listed in alphabetical order by the last name of the party involved and date from between 1751 to 1763. It is possible these transcripts were used in Mulkearn's book George Mercer Papers, the authoritative volume on the Ohio Company published by the University of Pittsburgh Press in 1954. Other materials in the collection consist of notes about industrial safety and hygiene during the late eighteenth to mid twentieth centuries prepared for an unknown lecture or publication and drafts of Mulkearn's essays on a variety of historical topics.

Arthur, John M. John M. Arthur papers and photographs 1966-2008 [manuscript]
Title:
John M. Arthur papers and photographs 1966-2008 [manuscript]
The John M. Arthur papers and photographs consist primarily of scrapbooks that document his career at Duquesne Light from 1967 to 1987. Local Pittsburgh newspaper clippings, annual reports, and internal news releases document the changes and developments concerning Duquesne Light during his tenure as CEO and chairman of the board. Interspersed with these business-related documents are event photographs, conference booklets, invitations, and award notifications that record his civic activities outside of his position at Duquesne Light. The personal correspondence in this collection concerns his retirement from Duquesne Light and mainly consists of greeting cards and letters addressed to Arthur. Miller, Foil A. Oral history interview with Foil A. Miller 2001 May 23.
Title:
Oral history interview with Foil A. Miller 2001 May 23.
Foil A. Miller begins the interview by describing the origins of the Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy [Pittcon]. Miller was involved early on with Pittcon and its two founding groups, the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh and the Society of Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh. In the 1950s, Pittsburgh had an active community of both academics and people from industry, which contributed to the success of Pittcon. Although the emphasis of the conference has evolved over time and reflects changes in the fields, it possesses a strong institutional history that allows for smooth transitions in leadership and administration. Miller outlines some of the changes in the field of instrumentation that he has observed during the course of his career and reflects on some of the key individuals in instrument entrepreneurship. Although Miller first came to Pittsburgh to work at the Mellon Institute, he soon moved to the University of Pittsburgh where he taught in the chemistry department until his retirement at age sixty-five. After retirement, Miller indulged his love of travel and developed an interest in stamp collecting, particularly stamps relating to physics and chemistry. He co-authored a book on these stamps with Edgar Heilbronner and is the editor of Philatelia Chimica et Physica, a newsletter about the subject.
