Edward Joseph "Joe" Shoben, Jr. had a professional career that spanned well over 40 years. He made significant contributions to the fields of psychology, higher education and college student affairs. Mr. Shoben was born Oct. 3, 1918 in Oberlin, Ohio. His family moved to Glendale, CA when he was a young child. Mr. Shoben graduated from University of Southern California where he received a BA in English, MA in sociology and a PhD in clinical psychology. Before finishing his dissertation in 1948, he was an assistant professor and clinical counselor at the University of Iowa where he continued to teach until 1950. Mr. Shoben was recruited to Teachers College, Columbia University in 1950. He spent 15 years there where he taught, wrote articles and co-authored a widely used text, The Psychology of Adjustment. After a few other positions and residences, Mr. Shoben moved to Olympia, WA in 1969. He served from 1969 to 1973 as the founding Executive Vice President of a new college, Evergreen State College. From 1973 until1977, he was the associate provost for graduate education and research at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1977, he returned to California and by 1982 he had retired to Patagonia, AZ. During his career, he had published 5 books and over 125 scholarly and professional papers. He had edited and been on editorial boards of several professional and academic journals. On 11 May 1996 he passed away in Patagonia, AZ.
