American collector.
Art collector and patron; Mrs. Jack Gardner.
Art historian, critic, collector, and teacher; Florence, Italy.
First name often spelled Bernhard. Was "discovered" by Isabella Stewart Gardner immediately after his graduation from Harvard. As a patron of the fine arts, Gardner financed Berenson's travels in Italy to collect Italian Renaissance art for the Venetian palazzo she re-created in Boston. Berenson bought Villa I Tatti, his home in Florence, before the Second World War. During the war he and his wife and his personal secretary were exiles in the villa for several years. He lived there until his death where upon he bequeathed it to Harvard University.
Art patron, collector, and museum founder; Boston, Mass.
Immediately after graduation from Harvard, Bernard Berenson was hired by Gardner to travel throughout Italy collecting Italian Renaissance art for her recreated Venetian palazzo in Boston. She established her palazzo as a museum of fine European art with stipulations that after her death none of the exhibited works was to be moved or rearranged, but left as she had designed during her lifetime.

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.

August Jaccaci papers
The papers of art historican August Jaccaci measure 7.2 linear feet and date from 1889 to 1935, with the bulk of the material dating from 1904 to 1914. The collection documents Jaccaci's work as an art historian, writer, and editor, primarily during the period he researched, compiled, and published his book <emph render="italic">Noteworthy Paintings in Private American Collections</emph>. More than one-half of the collection consists of extensive correspondence to and from many notable artists, collectors, and art historians, including John La Farge, Kenyon Cox, Isabella Stewart Gardner, and Bernard Sickert concerning the research and publication of the book. The papers also house legal files, writings and notes, art collection research files, and photographs of artwork.Correspondents include art historians, critic, artists, and art collectors, as well as publishers, photographers, printers, and agents. These letters discuss the research of famous American art collections, writing of essays for the book, and the book production and publication. There is extensive correspondence with his co-editor John La Farge, and with his employee Carl Snyder who was working in Europe. Other correspondence is with magazines, art associations, academic institutions, and French service organizations. Also included is a small amount of personal correspondence with friends and colleagues.Legal files include contracts and legal agreements for the August F. Jaccaci Company, as well as legal agreements with John La Farge concerning the research and publication of their joint book. Writings and notes include Jaccaci's lists and notes pertaining to the <emph render="italic">Noteworthy Paintings</emph> project, as well as other miscellaneous notes. Also found are writings by John La Farge that include drafts of a book, lectures, and notes about his artwork. Writings by others in this series also include draft essays by many art historians for Jaccaci's book. For the <emph render="italic">Noteworthy Paintings</emph> project, Jaccaci created numerous research files for American art collections and collectors that would be included. These research files include lists of works of art, essays and other notes about the collection written by prominent art historians. Photographs are of works of art supporting the research files. Also found in this collection are photographs of and notes about New England stencil designs. It is unclear what the connection is between Jaccaci and the stencil designs.

While the earlier daybooks have little writing in them, the later volumes contain a good deal of writing, making them similar to the memoirs. The eighth series consists of programs, primarily of performances that included Chadwick's music both at and outside of NEC. The writings of Chadwick - speeches, tributes, reports, and articles make up series nine. The tenth series consists of three scrapbooks, presumably assembled by Chadwick himself. The first, consisting of approximately twenty-five pages, includes mainly newspaper clippings from the years 1884-1886, many of which discuss Chadwick's music. Towards the back of the scrapbook there are a number of pages that contain clippings of poetry. The second scrapbook, spanning the years 1873-1896, includes various programs, invitations, articles, and correspondence to Chadwick. The third volume in this series which dates from 1904-1906 is a combination scrapbook/memoir. It contains programs and clippings, many of which are accompanied by Chadwick's handwritten annotations. This volume also contains some daily journal entries, mainly from January-May 1906. Some items in the eleventh series, the miscellaneous material category, include: biographical information about Chadwick, contemporary information/criticism relating to specific Chadwick works, inventories of Chadwick's music and his music collection, and records of Chadwick's music royalties from several publishers. Series twelve, a small collection of artifacts, includes Chadwick's wallet and its contents, a medal awarded to Chadwick by the American Academy of the Arts and letters in 1909, and a silver bowl given to Chadwick in 1914 by the NEC faculty. The microfilm reels contain Chadwick's memoirs, diaries, and scrapbooks, along with some musical works (Te Deum in D major, Quartet no. 2, vocal score to act 1 of Pontius Pilate), and music sketchbooks from 1885, 1894, and 1897.

Rendel, Elinor, 1885-1942. Diary of Elinor Rendel, 1907-1909 (inclusive).
Title:
Diary of Elinor Rendel, 1907-1909 (inclusive).
Diary begins with a "record of conversations," Christmas 1907, and continues with an account of a tour of southern Scotland, speaking and camping with a caravan, June-July 1908. The bulk of the diary describes Rendel's trip to the United States, noting her meetings with suffragists (Anna Howard Shaw, Rachel Foster Avery, among others) and prominent figures such as William James, Isabella Stewart Gardner, and Theodore Roosevelt. The group traveled to Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Buffalo, Chicago, Kentucky, Washington, D.C, among other places, and were often called upon to speak on women's suffrage. While in Buffalo they attended the annual convention of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, of which Shaw was president. In many cases speaking engagements were at colleges (including Harvard, Bryn Mawr, and Smith), and Rendel gives descriptions of her impressions and an account of how their speeches were received. During part of the trip they were accompanied by Anna Howard Shaw, and Rendel includes a summary of Shaw's "life story." She also describes visiting Hull House in Chicago, and a factory for women workers near Buffalo. Among her frequently astringent descriptions of the individuals she encountered are observations on the relationship between Ray and her mother. Also included are lists of "Americanisms," "American customs," and "American dishes."

August Jaccaci papers
