Born in New York City, Lamb studied there as a pupil of the Art Students League of New York, where he also served as president, 1886-1887. Lamb was the first to suggest the idea for the arch while he was vice-president of the National Sculpture Society. In 1899, under the auspices of the National Sculpture Society, he designed the initial model for the arch using the Roman Arch of Titus as a prototype.
