Gardner family papers, 1655-1959; bulk: 1820-1890.

Papers of the Gardner family of Salem and Brookline, Mass. include early deeds of Salem and wills of Ebenezer, George, John (1681-1722), Samuel, and Thomas Gardner. Later wills, estate inventories, and accounts (1817-31) of the estates of John (1731-1805) and Elizabeth Pickering Gardner are contained in a notebook compiled by their son Samuel P. Gardner. Also included are commonplace books of Rebecca R.L. Gardner; commonplace books and diary (1859) of Eliza P. Gardner; a diary of John L. Gardner (1804-1884) of an 1823 trip to Europe; and account books of George A. Gardner from 1851-57 and 1862-63. (Cont) Correspondence includes letters from John L. Gardner (1837-98) to his nephew George P. Gardner instructing him on stock and business dealings and on the disposition of art work that he and his wife Isabella Stewart Gardner collected while in Europe and Asia. Other letters to George P. from his father George A. Gardner concern financial dealings, his travels in Europe, and time spent on Rogue's Island, Maine. Additional correspondents include Augustus P. and John L. Gardner (b.1867).
