The Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company was a railroad that served the southeastern part of the United States.
Chartered in 1850 and also known as the L & N Railroad and Old Reliable. It was a small regional railroad until after the Civil War when it underwent expansion into a major Midwestern and Southern area railroad stretching from Louisville, to Atlanta, to Louisiana and northward to Chicago. The railroad played a major role in the rise of Southern industry. The growth of the steel industry and the development of the eastern Kentucky coal fields were in fact dependent upon the services and financial support of the railroads. Since the 1960s it has undergone a series of mergers until finally becoming part of the CSX Transportation system.
The Louisville and Nashville Railroad was a major transportation company connecting Louisville with the south.
The Louisville and Nashville Railroad Co. (L&N Railroad) was chartered by the Ky. legislature in 1850. The company began operations in Ala. in 1871. It completed its first road in the state from Decatur to Montgomery through Birmingham in 1872. By 1920 the company operated 1,998 miles of tracks in Ala. From 1880 until 1900 the railroad purchased many of the state's smaller companies including the Southern Alabama Railway Co., the New Orleans and Mobile Railroad, the Nashville, Florence, and Sheffield Railroad, and the Alabama Mineral Railroad. The systems of short lines and branches of the L&N formed the core of the most important transportation method in the state during the late nineteenth century.

Title:
William C. McChord Memoir, 1926.
Collection consists of a photocopy of the 163-page memoir of Washington County native William C. McChord. Early part of the memoir recounts his experiences growing up with a "large family composed of the white members and about 75 negroes of all ages." Of particular interest is a gripping account of McChord's mother intervening in the sale of a young slave (35-37). McChord also relays an eyewitness account of touring the scene, as a twelve-year-old, on the day after the Battle of Perryville (52-57). McChord records the recollections of William Hardesty who claims to have been present at the marriage of Abraham Lincoln's parents, Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks (86-90). As Washington County Attorney, McChord participated in negotiations regarding extension of the rail service to the county, a process he discusses in considerable detail (100-121). McChord's memoir also recounts his role in state government. He details his work on the Revisory Commission charged with bringing Kentucky statutes into conformity with the 1891 Kentucky Constitution (133-137. He also includes accounts of the nominating convention of 1889 in which he support John Young Brown (129-133) and his leadership in the faction that split from the Democratic party to oppose William Goebel's gubernatorial bid in 1900 (137-149).

Smith, Milton Hannibal, 1836-1921. Milton H. Smith family collection, 1797-1969 (bulk : 1865-1958).
Title:
Milton H. Smith family collection, 1797-1969 (bulk : 1865-1958).
This collection mostly contains the business papers, correspondence, and other materials of Milton Hannibal Smith, president of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, and his son Sidney Smith, vice president and general counsel for the L & N. Three letter books kept by Milton Smith, dated 1865-1876, contain many letters written in his capacity as general freight agent with the L & N. Several of these letters concern railroad operations and reflect Smith's close working relationship with L & N superintendent, Albert Fink, and the extension of his own interests and ambitions. Typescripts for a few of Smith's more significant letters concerning his suggestions for extensive reorganization and changes in company policy are available. The remainder of the letters in these volumes provide a detailed picture of Smith's outside investments, including instructions sent to the superintendent of the Selma cotton operations. Much of the collection contains papers concerning Milton Smith's personal business dealings and investments as well as L & N business, mostly that of buying up the stocks of smaller railroads. Also included are the religious poems of Jamie Harris Coleman, an African-American woman whose husband worked for the Smiths. Correspondence concerning Smith's efforts to get the poems published are included. There is also correspondence with family. The materials of Sidney Smith also mostly concern his personal business, such as investments and sale of property. His L & N papers concern tax matters and contracts. Correspondence from friends and family is included. Also present are papers concerning the Kentucky National Guard, including a mobilization plan for the 138th Field Artillery for 1932. This collection also contains papers of Smith family members: Eva Lee Cooper, Nettie Belle Felder, Milton Smith, Jr., Saidee K. Smith, Milton Smith II, and Annette Smith. Most of the papers concern investments made for them. Included are letters to Saidee Smith from her husband, Sidney, while he was in the Kentucky National Guard and while serving in Europe during W.W.I.
