This collection consists of railroad-related materials compiled by John R. Summers of Louisville, Kentucky. Materials, dating from 1862-1994, include roadway and track field notes, valuation field notes, valuation profiles, summary sheets, real estate map, vicinity maps, USGS maps, Sanborn maps, deed and contract information, timetables, photographs, valuation grading and cross section notes, books, station lists, memorabilia, scrapbooks, highway laws and regulations, magazines, maps and drawings by Summers, and Louisville and Nashville Railroad annual reports. The collection also includes an index of materials and a history of Summers' family.

John R. Summers was born in Irvine, Kentucky, and grew up in Louisville as a third-generation railroad employee. He began his railroad career with the Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company in the Engineering Department and retired as engineer of public projects for CSX in Jacksonville, Florida. His fascination with railroads led him to compile this large collection, dating from 1862 to 1994, which includes his memoirs and some family history.
