Fayette Van Alstine letters, 1861-1879, bulk 1862-1863.

Consists primarily of love letters written from Van Alstine of Louisville to Maria ("Marie") Ann Whiting of New Hampshire, documenting their long-distance courtship. The letters are passionate, articulate, and witty. Letters also discuss Civil War events in Kentucky, particularly regarding the L & N railroad, as well as the movements of John Hunt Morgan's forces and Buell's Army of the Ohio. Also includes a few later letters to his wife, and condolence letters to her after her husband's death. Van Alstine was a railroad agent; he and Whiting married on August 6, 1863 and had five children. He died unexpectedly Oct 29, 1879.
