Records, 1827-1966, containing legal records, letterbooks, legal correspondence, newspaper clippings, annual reports, tax assessments, and pass files. The legal records concern legal suits brought against the L&N Railroad Company for a variety of reasons including incorrect fares and personal injury. These records include case briefs, court decisions, and case settlements. The majority of correspondence, loose and in letterbooks, also are related to the legal cases in which the L&N was involved. Of special interest are the references in the case files and clippings concerning L&N's legal case over rates with the Ala. State Railroad Commission as well as a wide variety of tax assessments in various Ala. counties. The pass files, which include correspondence, contain references to those individuals or groups who received free or reduced passage on the railroad.
