Records, 1858-1913.

Records, 1858-1913, including a charter reprint, 1858, and annual reports to stockholders, 1882-1913, and a mortgage, 1904. The reports to the stockholders discussed the income and disbursements of the railroad in a detailed manner, including a profit and loss statement. Construction costs and bonded indebtedness were detailed, as were other matters. Some of the more prominent officers and board members of this railroad included Milton H. Smith, H.M. Bush, L.M. Falk, J.W. Sloss, John W. Durr, Bolling Hall, B.S. Bibb, W.B. Tanner, W.A. Gayle, Joseph E. Washington, John T. Milner, H.F. DeBardelaben, Samuel Blackwell, Merrill E. Pratt, E.B. Joseph, W.T. Northington, George W. Jones, and John C. Orr. There is a gap from 1883-1884 and from 1887-1894 and 1905 in the annual reports.

The South & North Ala. Railroad was chartered 17 Feb. 1854 and organized 27 Mar. 1858. It was built to traverse the distance from Montgomery to Decatur. By 1870 one historian estimated that the road had received $2,000,000 more than it had cost to construct it. In 1871 the L&N Railroad indirectly took over the South & North Ala. Railroad. That takeover almost bankrupted the L&N, while allowing the South and North to retain its own identity. In 1881 its di...
