Sinclair Lewis (1885–1951) was an American novelist, short-story writer, and playwright. He was the first American to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, in 1930.

Sinclair Lewis was a major cultural figure in the United States in the first half of the 20th century and, though he is best known as a novelist and social critic, he also wrote plays, poetry, and short fiction. Lewis was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1926 and, in 1930, he was the first American author to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.
