American educator, novelist, and Literary Editor of the Mark Twain Estate.

Betty White was one of De Voto's students at Northwestern in the 1920's. She was literary, and the best friend of Avis MacVicar, whom De Voto shortly married. As a senior at Northwestern, Betty White won a College Humor contest with a novel about sororities and snobbery, and went to Hollywood to help make it into a movie.

He taught English and creative writing at Northwestern and Harvard Universities. DeVoto was a novelist, historian, critic, editor, and a vigorous exponent of government conservation of natural resources. He died in 1955.
