Grolier Club. Committee on Public Exhibitions.

Hide Profile

Founded 1884 January 23 by a group of seven New York City book collectors with the object, as stated in its constitution, "of literary study and promotion of the arts pertaining to the production of books." Exhibitions formed a part of the Club's program from the first, and at least one "special" committee on arrangements was organized to oversee an individual exhibition. In 1885 a number of special committees were appointed to arrange exhibitions and explore the feasibility of Club publications on a variety of genres: books and periodicals; letter-press printing, lithography; Oriental typography; ornamental letters, prints, and wood engraving. In 1886 the Council of the Club approved a Committee on Arrangements to plan lectures and then to examine the question of new Club publications. In 1888 various special committees that had overseen meetings, lectures and exhibitions were merged into a standing Committee on Arrangements; the Club's 1902 constitution formally defined its duties as "the preparation, supervision, and charge of exhibitions." In 1972 the name was changed to the Committee on Public Exhibitions.
