Born in Chicago, he was educated privately and graduated from Harvard University, after which he travelled to Spain where he volunteered as an ambulance driver in World War I. He wrote during his service, and published several novels based on his experiences, while continuing his education in Europe. He went on to write some forty-two novels, as well as essays, poems, and plays, and his technical innovations and craftsmanship earned him critical praise and public acclaim.
