John T. Frederick gained wide renown as a radio book critic, literary critic, author and educator. In 1937 Frederick conducted a weekly book review program, Of Men and Books, sponsored by Northwestern University. Frederick taught at Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism, where the program originated. During his career, Frederick wrote two novels of Midwestern farm life: Druida (1923) and Green Bush (1925). He published four college textbooks, one with Leo L. Ward (Good Writing, 1923).

During his years at State University of Iowa he founded the Midland, a regional magazine which later won a national circulation award. With his co-author Frank Luther Mott, Frederick published the work of many writers who later become well known, including Albert Halper, James T. Farrell, Paul Engle, Ruth Suckow, Paul Corey, Marquis Childs, MacKinley Kantor, Phil Strong, and August Derleth.
