Mark Van Doren was an American author, scholar, and educator. He is probably best remembered for his long tenure as Columbia professor, where he was noted for his inspired Humanities courses and respect for students. His poetry was meticulously well-crafted and grounded in tradition; he also wrote critical studies and drama, and worked as an editor and anthologist.

Van Doren was a prominent American poet, critic, and scholar, who taught at Columbia and was mentor to a host of contemporary American writersincluding Lionel Trilling, Thomas Merton, Jack Kerouac, and Allen Ginsberg. Van Doren has published critical studies of Thoreau, Dryden, and Hawthorne, as well as writing 27 volumes of poetry, 10 novels, and 4 plays. In1940 Van Doren won the Pulitzer for "Collected Poems."
