Revolutionary general. Born in England, Gates settled in Virginia in 1772 after a career in the British army that included service in the French and Indian War. He was commissioned adjutant-general of the Continental Army in 1775, and was in command at the pivotal victory of Saratoga. After Saratoga he served as president of the Board of War, returning to the field in April 1778.

Revolutionary general. Born in England, Gates settled in Virginia in 1772 after a career in the British army that included service in the French and Indian War. He was commissioned a brigadier general in the Continental Army in 1775, and was in command at the pivotal victory at Saratoga. In 1780, after a disastrous defeat at Camden, Congress relieved him of his command and ordered an inquiry into his conduct. The army delayed the inquiry, and Gates insistently requested it. Congress finally rescinded the order on 5 August 1782, and Gates returned to the army, retiring again in 1783.
