Born in Philadelphia, November 10, 1753; died, August 20, 1813. He was educated in a Quaker school; joined the 6th Pa. Regt. as a lieutenant Colonel, October 1, 1776; served throughout the Revolution; on September 30, 1783 was commander of the army. He married Sarah Jenkins on October 19, 1784. His special service was on Scioto, Ohio, in Indiana and Illinois against the Indians. It is said that although he was a very brave and fine man, he was not particularly successful as a commander. Fort Harman was named for him. He resigned from the army, January 1, 1792. (DAB) (blue index cards)
