Sarah Orne Jewett was one of America's foremost regional writers. She produced novels, stories, and sketches, generally concerned with the lives and traditions of women in the rural areas of coastal New England. Her gentle, well-observed, respectful style transcends the limitations of genre and continue to make her work relevant.

Sylvester Manor Archive, 1649-1996
Title:
Sylvester Manor Archive 1649-1996
Sylvester Manor is the home of the original European settlers on Shelter Island in eastern Long Island, New York, created in 1652 with the arrival of Nathaniel and Grissell Sylvester. For over 350 years and continuing to this day, the Manor has remained with descendents of the original Sylvesters, and the Sylvester Manor Archive contains documents dating from its European settlement to the late-20th century. The earliest documents provide evidence of an operational northern provisioning plantation involved in the Atlantic trade of the 17th century, while later portions of the collection document the lives of several notable descendents including Ezra L’Hommedieu, an attorney and politician from the American Revolutionary Era, Samuel Smith Gardiner, an attorney from a prominent family of eastern Long Island, and Eben Norton Horsford, a scientist at the forefront of the development of American food science and chemistry and a successful entrepreneur.

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.

A collection of letters, the bulk falling around 1875, primarily addressed to Marshall Train Bigelow, printer and proof reader with the Cambridge firm of Welch, Bigelow & Co. Title:
Penn School Papers, 1862-2004 and undated (bulk 1862-1978)
The Penn School on Saint Helena Island, S.C., was founded during the Civil War by northern philanthropists and white missionaries for former enslaved individuals in an area occupied by the United States Army. Over the years, with continuing philanthropic support, it served as school, health agency, and cooperative society for rural African Americans of the Sea Islands. The first principals were Laura M. Towne and Ellen Murray, followed around 1908 by Rossa B. Cooley and Grace B. House, and in 1944 by Howard Kester and Alice Kester. The school closed in 1948 and became Penn Community Services in 1951, with Courtney Siceloff as the first director. The original deposits are papers, mostly 1900-1950 and primarily correspondence of the directors and of the trustees, treasurers, and publicity workers located elsewhere, and photographs. Topics include emancipation, African American education, Reconstruction, political and social change in South Carolina, agricultural extension work, public health issues, damage from hurricanes, World War I and World War II, the boll weevil and the cotton industry, the effects of the Great Depression on the school and the local population, changes in the school leading to a greater emphasis on social action in the outer world, and the end of the school and the turn to community service. Volumes include diaries, extracts from letters, recollections, minutes of the board of trustees, ledgers, cashbooks, inventories, financial records, registers of students and teachers, and minutes of various clubs and societies. Printed materials consists of newspapers clippings, pamphlets, promotional literature, school materials, administrative circulars, and annual reports. There are also about 3,000 photographs in the collection, dating from the 1860s to 1953 (bulk 1905-1944), documenting school activities, Island scenes and Islanders, classes and teachers, baptisms, agricultural activities, parades, fairs, and special events at the Penn School. The Addition of November 2012 includes papers, volumes, printed materials, photographs, audio recordings, and film that are similar in scope and content to the original deposit. Also included is a copy of De Nyew Testament, the Gullah translation of the New Testament (2005).

Many of the letters to Twisleton, including 51 letters from the handwriting expert Charles Chabot, concern his involvement in the controversy surrounding the identity of the author of the "Junius" letters. There are also 26 letters between Twisleton and Walter Savage Landor. Letters to Sarah Whitman are often of a social nature but some concern her art work. There are 30 letters to Whitman from Phillips Brooks. Additionally, there is a series of 19 letters from Henry Parkman to his mother and a group of letters to Frances Parkman from Sarah Orne Jewett.

Title:
Mosely family papers, 1673-2000 (bulk 1842-ca. 1940).
Correspondence, diaries, and miscellaneous papers by or relating to the John M. and [Julia] Anna (Holcomb) Mosely family of Granby, Conn. and Westfield, Mass. John Mosely's letter from Marysville, Calif., "Gateway to the Goldfields," includes references to gold mining. Entries in Anna's diary concern the weather, social visits, church attendance, chores and housekeeping duties, social events, and the birthdays, marriages, illnesses, and deaths of family and friends. There are also personal financial accounts and occasional entries about teaching (e.g. number of scholars). Anna also kept a small notebook, 1853, in which she recorded information useful for a teacher: notes and facts on various subjects, "odd bits of advice", proverbs, and "rules for the teacher." Arthur Mosely's diaries describe work on his grandfather Holcomb's farm in Granby, then work on a farm in Westfield. Entries concern crops, cultivation of fields, livestock, and metal work. There is a scrapbook by Eliza (Rust) Mosely, containing newspaper clippings on Wolfeborough [NH] high school; some social and family events; and Eliza's arts and crafts shop. There is also some genealogical correspondence concerning the Jewett family, a few invitations or announcements; family photographs; and a brief handwritten Holcomb/Goddard genealogy.

New England Hospital for Women and Children. Records, 1792-1994
Title:
New England Hospital for Women and Children Records 1792 - 1994
Women's hospital. This hospital was, for more than a century, a teaching hospital for women doctors and a place where women could receive treatment from them. It was the first hospital in Boston to offer obstetrics, gynecology, and pediatrics all in one facility. Material includes memoranda, written histories, photographs and scrapbooks. Also documented are such topics as a 1915 controversy over abortion, using chloroform as an anesthetic, and African American interns. The collection includes several hundred letters collected for their autograph value for fund-raising fairs. The letters do not relate to the Hospital; content includes woman suffrage, abolition, freedmen's education, literature, and Civil War relief. Notable correspondents include: Louisa May Alcott, Susan B. Anthony, Alice Stone Blackwell, Elizabeth Blackwell, Lydia Maria Child, Thomas Wentworth Higginson, Julia Ward Howe, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Elizabeth Palmer Peabody, Lucy Stone, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and John Greenleaf Whittier.
