Independent co-educational country day school, grades K-12, serving students from seacoast area of Maine and New Hampshire; founded in 1791 as preparatory school; male boarding students accepted in 1857; in 1960 last public school graduation and boarding school era begun, with last boarders graduating in 1974; country day school began in 1977; custodian to the oldest secondary school building in Maine; 5 buildings on National Register of Historic Places.
