Stimson, Henry L. (Henry Lewis), 1867-1950. Henry Lewis Stimson papers, 1846-1966.
Title:
Henry Lewis Stimson papers
The papers consist of correspondence, letter books, speeches, articles, letters to the editor, statements prepared for presentation to Congress and substantial subject files with clippings, printed matter, reports, memoranda and photographs related to Henry Stimson's various public offices. While the official records of Stimson's service (as Secretary of War under President Taft, Secretary of State under Herbert Hoover and as Secretary of War in the cabinets of Presidents Roosevelt and Truman) are all in the National Archives, the substantial correspondence, as well as other papers, in this collection provide important records of his activities as a private citizen and in office and on special missions. His work in Latin America in helping to settle a dispute between Chile and Peru in 1926, and as the United States representative seeking to bring an end to a civil war in Nicaragua in 1927 is shown in the papers with first-hand reports and background material. His service as Secretary of State under Hoover (1929-1933) is particularly well documented with memoranda of conversations with foreign diplomatic representatives, and briefing books presenting background information on foreign affairs for the period. Of major importance are Stimson's diaries which span the years 1904-1945, covering the entire period of his public career and including references to the early stages of the development of the atom bomb. Extensive family papers include the correspondence (1846-1966) of Stimson's parents, sister, and other relatives. In his father's papers are a series of diaries (1864-1916). There is also a collection of letters by Stimson to his wife and to other family members.

The Philip S. Hench Walter Reed Yellow Fever Collection documents the work of the U.S. Army Yellow Fever Commission, the legacy of the commission’s discoveries, the lives of individuals who were connected to the commission, and twentieth century campaigns to shape public memory of the commission. Items in the collection date from 1800 to 1998, with the bulk of the items dating from 1864 to 1974. A wide range of formats are represented in the collection including, but not limited to the following: articles, artifacts, audiocassettes, bills (legislative records), biographies, charts (graphic documents), correspondence, diaries, editorials, interviews, journals (periodicals), magazines, maps, medical records, military records, negatives (photographic), notes, photographs, reports, reprints, scrapbooks, and speeches. Unique materials in the collection are supplemented with copies of original documents and photographs housed in other institutions (e.g the U.S. National Archives). Most of the materials in the collection were collected or created by Nobel laureate Philip Showalter Hench while researching the history of the U.S. Army Yellow Fever Commission.

Katherine Mayo papers, 1835-1968 (inclusive), 1918-1940 (bulk).
Correspondence, diaries, writings, photographs, scrapbooks, research materials, and miscellanea documenting the personal life and literary career of Katherine Mayo, an author of several historical and investigative articles, essays, and books from 1896 to 1940. Correspondence files document the detailed literary research Mayo conducted and the strong public reaction generated by her writings. This is particularly true for such works as: Justice to All (1917), The Isles of Fear (1925), and Mother India (1927). Diaries provide sporadic information on the daily activities of Mayo, while writings include drafts of many works. Photographs and research materials further detail the foreign travels (South America, India, Philippines) and subsequent literary works produced by Mayo. Scrapbooks contain reviews and commentary relating to Mayo's publications. The papers provide information on such diverse topics as life in India, Philippine Islands, South America, and the Pennsylvania state police, George Washington, the Y.M.C.A. during World War I, war veterans of World War I, and the narcotics trade.

Jones, Glenn I. Glenn I. Jones papers, 1928-1940.
Title:
Glenn I. Jones papers, 1928-1940.
General description of the collection: The Glenn I. Jones papers consist of twenty-four letters, one telegram, 2 news articles with translations, and four photographs. Eight letters from Major General (MG) Leonard Wood, commander, 10th Infantry Division, to COL Jones talk about the Jones's job as division surgeon for the 10th Infantry Division and Camp Surgeon for Camp Funston, KA, recommend his promotion, congratulate him for receiving a medal. After Wood's retirement, Wood writes about health, his service in the Philippines, and the Catholic - Masonic controversy when he was contemplating running for the Republican Party's nomination for President in 1920. One letter from COL E.H. Humphrey, Chief of Staff for the 10th Infantry Division, commends Jones for his work as Division and Camp Surgeon in training the division sanitary detachments. One telegram (18 Feb 1919) tells that the Department of War can not release Jones to become the Central Department Surgeon. Two letters from Surgeon General MG Merritte W. Ireland received while COL Jones was accompanying GEN John J. Pershing as a medical aide on the Plebiscite Commission to Chile, talk about a new drug for the treatment of amoebic dysentery, about GEN Pershing's dental problems, and department budget difficulties. Eleven letters from GEN Pershing (26 June 1928 - 11 Mar 1940) are of a personal nature and discuss Pershing's travels and health issues. One letter to GEN Peyton C. March deals with an article written by GEN March concerning GEN Pershing's service on the plebiscite commission and disputed by COL Jones. GEN March's answer to Jones is also included. One article from Chilean newspaper El Corvo accuses GEN Pershing of doing nothing for the plebiscite commission, and the second from La Aurora praises COL, then Major, Jones for his work among the local population while he served on the commission. One undated autographed photograph of COL Jones was cut from a publication. Two undated photographs are of GEN Pershing, COL Marchand, Commandant of the Chilean Carabineros, MAJ Jones, MAJ John Quekemeyer, and unidentified others during the Plebiscite Commission trip to Chile in 1925 and 1926. One undated photograph shows COL Jones and his wife Elizabeth, Dorothy Grant, and unidentified others at Kelley Field, Ft. Sam Houston, TX for an airplane ride.

Wood, Leonard, 1860-1927. [Letter] 1917 Sep. 29, Headquarters 89th Division, Camp Funston, Kan. [to] Dean Yeomans / Leonard Wood.
Title:
[Letter] 1917 Sep. 29, Headquarters 89th Division, Camp Funston, Kan. [to] Dean Yeomans / Leonard Wood.
Maj. Gen. Wood writes as a concerned father about his son Osborne to Yeomans who is a dean at Harvard University. Wood asks that Yeomans "keep as close an eye as possible on the boy. ... Buck him up a bit now and then." Wood then writes about the situation at Camp Funston where he is the commanding general of the 89th Division. Under his command currently are 25,000 troops who are without appropriate equipment. The enclosed photograph [dated Sept. 28, 1917] illustrates his point--a man in denim overalls with a wooden rifle. Furthermore there are another 25,000 troops scheduled to arrive. He blasts the "dishonesty of the official statements concerning our condition."

Charles F. Lummis : a brief biography, after 1928.
Biography of Charles Fletcher Lummis (1859-1928), prominent journalist, poet, photographer, and activist of the American west and founder of the Southwest Museum. The biography begins with Lummis' childhood in Massachusetts, where he was rigorously educated by his father following his mother's early death. References are also made to Lummis' relationships with his first wife Dr. Dorothea Rhodes, Theodore Roosevelt and Boies Penrose at Harvard, Harrison Gray Otis, Leonard Wood, Adolph F. Bandelier, Henry Herbert Knibbs, and members of his "Lion's Den" literary circle. Carbon copy of typewritten manuscript with handwritten notes.
