Biographical note: Charles Baehr Gatewood (1853-1896) attended West Point and was assigned to the 6th Cavalry in 1877. He served as a commander of Indian scouts in Arizona and New Mexico taking part in campaigns including the Victorio War of 1879-1880, Crook's expedition into the Sierra Madre in 1883, and the Geronimo Campaign of 1885-1886.
