Jay G. Hayden retired on March 1, 1965, after 65 years in the newspaper business. The acknowledged dean of Washington correspondents, he wrote from the capitol for the Detroit News for more than 49 years.

He was born December 8, 1884, in Cassopolis, Michigan, and grew up on his father's farm, and was willing to work at anything to get away from the cows. He worked for a series of small newspaper presses throughout high school and college, including the Vigilant, the Escanaba Daily Mirror, and the University of Michigan print shop.

In 1915 he went to Washington, D.C., and by 1918 he was Washington Bureau chief. He was one of two US news correspondents accredited to sit in on the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, and he set up a London Bureau for the Detroit News in the same year. His travels also included the Philippines, China, and Japan.

He died on October 24, 1971, and is buried in Cassopolis, Michigan.
