Parker, George F. (George Frederick), 1847-1928
Variant namesGeorge F. Parker was born in Indiana. He moved to Iowa with his family where he attended school and graduated from the State University of Iowa. After graduation he returned to the family farm before becoming the editor and proprietor of a Warren County, Iowa Democratic weekly paper. This was the first of numerous editor positions with newspapers in Iowa, Indiana, Washington, D.C., New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and New York City. Many of the papers he served had connections with the Democratic National Committee and promoted the political career of Grover Cleveland. He contributed to various monthly magazines and delivered speeches for academic institutions and scholarly societies, writing and speaking on economic and political questions. During Cleveland's presidency Parker was appointed U.S. consul to Birmingham, England. He was the author The Life of Grover Cleveland (Cassell Publishing Co., 1892) and Iowa Pioneer Foundations (State Historical Society of Iowa, 1940), among other historical and biographical works.
