Ethan Allen Hitchcock was born in Vergennes, Vermont in 1798. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1817 and was a career Army officer. He served in the Second Seminole War, the Mexican-American War, and the Civil War. A philosopher and scholar, he published several monographs, including Remarks Upon Alchemy and the Alchemists (1857), Swedenborg: A Hermetic Philosopher (1858), and Christ the Spirit (1860). His memoirs are collected in A Traveler in Indian Territory: The Journal of Ethan Allen Hitchcock (Cedar Rapids, Ia., The Torch Press,1930).
Ethan Allen Hitchcock, grandson of the American patriot Ethan Allen, attended West Point in 1817 and spent most of his life thereafter in the U.S. military.
He served under General Taylor in the Mexican War and held administrative posts with the Union Army during the Civil War.
Career army officer and author.
An 1817 U.S. Military Academy graduate born in Vergennes, Vt., Hitchcock served with distinction in various military assignments prior to his Jan., 1842, appointment as lieut. col. of the 3rd Infantry. Stationed at Fort Stansbury, Fla., Hitchcock was ordered in the fall of 1842 to reopen the Seminole War and to pursue, capture, and destroy the remnants of a fugitive Creek Indian band headed by the chief Pascofa. Exercising his belief that friendly negotiation was more effective than hostilities, Hitchcock dismissed two local volunteer companies and convinced the chief and his band to leave peaceably for Arkansas. Throughout his long army career, Hitchcock also studied philosophy, alchemy, and literature, and published several works on those topics.

Commentary on Winfield Scott's campaign in the Mexican War, [18--].
Autograph manuscript, with corrections, written by Ethan Allen Hitchcock, discussing events of General Winfield Scott's campaign in the Mexican War. Hitchcock describes the battles of Vera Cruz and Molino del Rey, and he discusses Scott's character and controversies relating to actions of Generals Gideon Johnson Pillow and William Jenkins Worth during Scott's advance to Mexico City. The manuscript, whose pages are numbered 83-114, is untitled and appears to be excerpted from a larger work. Bound in are an engraved portrait of Hitchcock and notes of J. M. Fox, a former owner.

Hawthorne family. Hawthorne family papers, 1825-1929.
Title:
Hawthorne family papers, 1825-1929.
The papers afford glimpses into the social and private lives of some of the Hawthorne family. Like others of her time and circumstances, Sophia Hawthorne devoted generous amounts of time to correspondence and journal-keeping; her surviving papers provide a rich reflection of life in 19th-century Concord, in Cuba, and later in England and Europe during Hawthorne's tenure as Consul at Liverpool. Included are letters, verse, journals, and notes relating to the family and milieu of Nathaniel Hawthorne and of the men and women of the American literary renaissance and of the Transcendentalist movement. Virtually all of the letters of Rose Hawthorne Lathrop were written to Clifford Smyth, a literary editor and historian, and to Clifford's wife, Beatrix, Rose's niece; Rose dearly loved Beatrix and her family. Sent from Rosary Hill Home between 1913 and 1926, the year Rose died, the letters illustrate some of the familial concerns of Rose, who was by then Mother Alphonsa: she was for example, worried about her brother, Julian, and she remained committed to preserving her parents' memory. Also included are circa 450 pages of holograph manuscripts which, though undated, can be placed as pre-1900. The manuscripts consist of complete drafts of short stories, verse, and substantial fragments of several novels. These manuscripts seem not to have been previously published. Also present are two other items of interest: a copybook dated 1858, when Rose was seven, with penmanship exercises and numerous poems, and a holograph journal from 1873, when she was 22 years old. Of Julian Hawthorne's letters, almost all were written to Julian's son-in-law, Clifford Smyth, and to Clifford's wife, Beatrix (Julian's daughter). Three items are childhood notes, written in pencil, two to Julian's aunt Elizabeth Palmer Peabody; the other to his maternal grandfather, Nathaniel Peabody. Also included are Hawthorne family memorabilia and photographs, and manuscript papers of actress Anna Cora Mowatt.

Indiana Indian agents. Papers, 1835-1838.
Title:
Papers, 1835-1838.
The materials in this collection consist of three letters concerning the removal of the Potawatomie and Miami Indians from Indiana during the 1830s. The first letter, dated 27 July 1835, is from James Williams to Indian agent Able C. Pepper. Williams is responding to an advertisement that Pepper had placed in the Canal Telegraph and offers to furnish rations for the Potawatomie and Miami Indians. The next letter, dated 14 July 1838, is from George T. Bostwick to Captain E. A. Hitchcock. Bostwick offers to ferry supplies for the Indians by river in order to avoid the expense of land shipment. In the August 1838 letter, Hitchcock writes W. Lewis to inform him that the goods will be delivered to the Potawatomie Indians, citing "the state of the Emigration" as the cause for their detention.

Sprague, Achsa W., 1827-1861. Achsa W. Sprague papers, 1840-1862.
Title:
Achsa W. Sprague papers, 1840-1862.
The Achsa Sprague papers, 1840-1862 (bulk 1852-1861), are primarily letters to Sprague during the period of her life when she was most actively touring and lecturing as a Spiritualist. Some of the correspondence is personal providing local news about Ludlow, Plymouth, and Brandon, Vermont. Among family and friends who were regular correspondents are sisters Celia Sprague and Sarah Randall, cousin Ephraim Sprague, and Delia C. Pollard. Other letters are from followers and fellow spiritualists. Repeat correspondents include Benjamin Starbuck of Troy, New York, Cyrus T. Parker, J.H. Crawford, Adolph Eiswald, and Ethan Allen Hitchcock. Many letters invite Sprague to lecture throughout the country. There is mention of Spiritualists' conventions held in Rutland, Vermont, June 1858; Utica, New York, September 1858; Boston, Massachusetts, May 1859; South Royalton, Vermont, January 1860; and Oswego, New York, July 1861. Several letters in 1860 suggest that Spiritualists unite and even write a constitution, and again in June 1862 it is suggested that the mediums organize. There is correspondence about articles Sprague wrote under the pseudonym Bell, for the World's Paper, a Spiritualist newspaper, published by A.C. Estabrook of Sandusky, Vermont. Estabrook published the Green Mountain Sibyl beginning in 1858 and there is correspondence about that publication as well. Primarily a Spiritualist, Sprague also was an advocate of Women's Rights, an abolitionist, and was very aware of the political and economic unrest of the time; these topics are covered in her correspondence.
