Brockenbrough, William, fl. 1763,. Papers of the Carter and Wellford family of Sabine Hall, 1650 (1736-1874) 1936.
Title:
Papers of the Carter and Wellford family of Sabine Hall, 1650 (1736-1874) 1936.
The papers of the Carter and Wellford families contain deeds, patents, stocks and bonds, wills maps, surveys, and indentures as well as correspondence. The early correspondence of Landon Carter (1710-1778) deals with tobacco production and sale, land purchases, and management of his plantation. Family and neighborhood news is frequently conveyed. Later correspondence contains many references to political troubles with England, action taken in Virginia, and events in the first years of the Revolution such as the Stamp Act, the Boston Tea Party, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and the Virginia Convention, and includes several letters to the editor of the Virginia Gazette on the political situation. The diary of Landon Carter, 1763-1778, records daily farming activities, with many comments on his slaves, remarks on the Revolution and its ultimate effect, and reflections on his estrangement from his son Robert Wormeley Carter, the second (1792-1861). The correspondence of Robert Wormeley Carter the second contains more local and agricultural news with a few letters generated by the latter's political career touching on national politics. Of interest are mentions of the War of 1812 and the evacuation of slaves at the approach of British warships, a letter from John Tyler on Andrew Jackson's fiscal policies, and comments on the Whig Party and the Virginia Reform Convention of 1851. One Civil War letter mentions the death of an acquaintance and two affadavits, 1863, concern slaves who fled to Union forces. Interspersed in the large segment of R.W. Carter II's estate settlement papers are several comments on reconstruction in Virginia. Tazewell family. Papers, 1756-1931.
Title:
Papers, 1756-1931.
The papers of Henry Tazewell (1753-1799) and Littleton Waller Tazewell (1774-1860) constitute the majority of the records in this collection. Though numerous receipts and vouchers are included, the extensive number and range of more important papers reflect the prominence of the Tazewell family in Virginia's history. The earliest Tazewell papers are chiefly wills and legal papers relating to land titles, many of them copies, but filed under the original date. From 1762-1799, letters are interspersed with legal documents and business papers relating to the Tazewell's of their clients. From 1800-1859, the papers are chiefly those of Littleton Waller Tazewell or his son, John Nivison Tazewell. Correspondence between members of the family illustrates the life of an upper class Virginia family of the period, with a great deal of information about the family plantations, letters from the son at school (Harvard, William & Mary, University of Virginia, & Princeton). The material also sheds some light on Norfolk history, and it has important papers reflecting national history in the 1820's and 1830's. The material from the 1860's deals chiefly with the career of Edmund Bradford, husband of Anne Elizabeth Tazewell, an officer in the Confederate Army. There are a few letters from Mrs. Bradford at Charlotte Court House, giving her impressions of the last days of the Civil War. Dated materials are arranged chronologically in boxes 1-19: box 1, 1650-1799; box 2, 1780-1788; box 3, 1789-1795; box 4, 1796-1801; box 5, 1802-1804; box 6, 1805-1811; box 7, 1812-1818; box 8, 1819-1821; box 9, 1822-1824; box 10, 1825; box 11, 1826; box 12, 1827-1829; box 13, 1830-1831; box 14, 1832-1834; box 15, 1835-1839; box 16, 1840-1843; box 17, 1844-1847; box 18, 1848-1863; box 19, 1864-1899. Undated materials (boxes 20-21) contains papers of Henry Tazewell related to his law practice and his senatorial career; there are a few papers which discuss the impeachment of William Blount. There are also legal and political papers of Littleton Tazewell, bills and receipts, undated maps of Virginia and South Carolina, clippings and printed materials. The volumes (boxes 20-21) contains 132 letters from Littleton Tazewell to his son, John Nivison, written 1821-1853; "Sketches of His Own Family," by Littleton; an index of letters received by family members and a letterbook, by John N. Tazewell; plantation account books and field notes of survey, by Littleton. The Floyd, Patton, Smith, Taylor, and Tucker letters (Acc. No. 23749) may be found in box 25. Wills and miscellany are in box 26. Richard Henry Lee Papers, 1763-1823
Title:
Richard Henry Lee Papers 1763-1823
A politician and arch revolutionary, Richard Henry Lee was an impassioned supporter of American independence from the mid-1760s. Born into one of the most prominent families in the colony on January 20, 1732, Lee was bred to a political life, serving in the Virginia House of Burgesses during the Stamp Act and Non-importation crises, helping convey his state into the revolutionary camp. As a delegate to the Continental Congress, Lee was the first to officially move that a declaration of independence be drafted, and he ended his public career as a principled opponent of ratification of the Constitution and as Virginia's first U.S. Senator. He died at home in Virginia in June 1794. A small, but highly valuable collection, the papers of Richard Henry Lee document the political life and activities of one of the most ardent revolutionaries in Virginia. The 0.5 linear feet of letters (193 items), most addressed to Lee, are an important resource for study of pre-Revolutionary political agitation in Virginia, the increasing connections forged between the colonies, and the political course of the war. To a lesser degree the collection documents Lee's late-life anti-federalism. Among the major correspondents are Lee's brothers Arthur and William, and such leaders in the revolutionary cause as George Washington, Samuel Adams, Charles Lee, John Adams, and Thomas Paine.

Title:
Letter, 1776 November 4, Philadelphia, [Pa.] to John Page, Williamsburg, [Va.].
Is sorry to hear of Page's illness. Agrees with Page that military matters should take precedence over governmental, and that the country should be better prepared for war. Wishes Portsmouth and Norfolk [Va.] shipbuilding could be made impregnable by fortifying them with cannons as Gen[eral] [Adam] Stephen has advised. Asks Page to recommend "the most vigorous attention to the cannon foundry on Jamestown [Island]." Hopes the powder mills and salt petre works are not neglected. Relates the U.S. forces beat the enemy the last five times out of six. "Our army is in good spirits and do not wish to avoid a general engagement."
