Patrick Henry, born in Hanover County, Virginia, was a symbol of America's struggle for liberty and self-government. Henry was a lawyer, patriot, orator, and participant in almost every aspect of the founding of America. He studied law on his own, and in 1760, he appeared in Williamsburg to take his attorney's examination before Robert Carter Nicholas and others. Henry served in the Virginia House of Burgesses, was a member of the Virginia committee of Correspondence, a delegate to the Virginia Convention, and a delegate to the Virginia Constitution Ratification Convention. He played a prominent role in the May 6, 1776, convention and became the first governor of the commonwealth under its new constitution. He served three terms as governor of Virginia. Henry is perhaps best known for the speech he made in the House of Burgesses on March 23, 1775, urging the legislature to take military action against the encroaching British military force, which ended with the phrase "Give me liberty or give me death!"

Patrick Henry was born May 29, 1736 in Hanover County, Virginia. In 1760, he obtained a law license and soon became a leader in resisting British colonial policies. He continued to gain notoriety as a radical leader during the American Revolution, served in the First and Second Continental Congresses (1774-1775), and headed the Virginia militia during the early days of the Revolution. He became governor of Virginia serving from 1776-1779. He owned several thousand acres of land in Kentucky and signed many warrants for Kentucky claims. As governor again during 1784-85, Henry sought protection for the frontier after his brother-in-law was killed by Indians in Kentucky. He eventually returned to his law practice, continually refusing appointments such as offers to become secretary of state in 1795 and chief justice in 1796. He died June 9, 1799, just before taking a seat in the Virginia legislature.
