Trumbull was a painter. Potts was medical director in the Revolutionary Army.
John Trumbull was born in Lebanon, Connecticut in 1756. He graduated from Harvard College in 1773. From 1775 through 1779 Trumbull served with the revolutionary forces in various capacities, including a brief appointment as an aide-de-camp to George Washington. During the 1780s Trumbull studied and painted in London and on the Continent and began the works on historical subjects which would eventually earn him the reputation of painter of the Revolution. In 1824 Trumbull installed his paintings in the United States Capitol. A collection of Trumbull's work became the center around which the Yale Art Gallery was formed. Trumbull also served as a private secretary to John Jay during negotiations which ended in Jay's Treaty. In 1817 he became president of the American Academy of Fine Arts. Trumbull died in 1843 in New Haven, Connecticut.

Artist; U.S. claims commissioner.
Painter; New Haven, Connecticut.
Born in Lebanon, Ct. Studied under Benjamin West in London. Painted historic portraits and paintings.
American painter John Trumbull was born the son of Governor Jonathan Trumbull of Connecticut in 1756. He aspired to be a painter like his hero, John Singleton Copley, against the wishes of his father. Graduating from Harvard in 1773 as the youngest member of his class, Trumbull's career was soon dampened by the Revolutionary War. In 1775, he enlisted as an Aide-de-Camp and drew strategic maps for Revolutionary War generals, but resigned after two years to study art in Boston. In 1780, he traveled to London to study art, but soon returned home after being arrested for aiding the execution of John Andre.
Trumbull returned to London five years later to study with noted painter Benjamin West. West wanted to create a series of paintings depicting the historical events of the Revolutionary War, but because he feared falling out of favor with the King of England, West encouraged and guided Trumbull through the painting of the series instead. The first of this series is Trumbull's well known work, "Battle of Bunker's Hill." After completing several more pieces in the series, Trumbull returned home in 1789 to paint small portraits of American generals and prominent figures, including the famous portrait of George Washington in 1790.
Trumbull would make two more lengthy trips to England. On the first, beginning in 1794, he accompanied John Jay as his executive secretary. While on this trip, Trumbull married Sarah Hope Harvey in 1800, returning with her to New York in 1804, where they lived until 1808. The second trip to England came in 1808. Trumbull and his wife remained in London until 1816 when they returned to the United States, shortly before Sarah's death that same year.
1817 proved to be an important year in Trumbull's career. Not only was he elected president of the American Academy of Fine Arts, but he was commissioned to paint four large historical murals for the rotunda of the Capitol building, which he completed in 1824.
In 1831, he sold the works in his studio to Yale University. Trumbull died in 1843.

John Trumbull was born in Lebanon, CT on June 6, 1756 to Connecticut Governor Jonathan Trumbull, Sr., and his wife Faith Robinson. As the youngest of six John looked up to his older siblings, particularly his sister Faith, whose drawings fascinated and inspired him, and his brother Jonathan, Jr., later Governor of Connecticut, with whom he regularly corresponded. Despite an accident when he was a child that left him without sight in his left eye, John pursued his talent for art. Trumbull entered Harvard as a Junior at the age of 15 and graduated a year and a half later in 1773. His career was interrupted two years later by the start of the Revolutionary War. He served for two years as aid-du-camp and then as Deputy Adjutant General drawing out plans and maps before resigning in 1777 to devote himself to developing his talents as a painter. In 1780 he had the opportunity to travel to London to study with established American painter Benjamin West. During this time period he painted over two numerous miniature portraits and small representations of the war.
Trumbull spent two years in Connecticut from 1782-84, but returned to London in January of 1784 to again paint under West. The period he spent painting in London, which lasted approximately a decade, was Trumbull's most successful as an artist. During this time he produced such works as Battle of Bunker Hill, Death of General Montgomery at Quebec and Declaration of Independence ; as well as portraits of General Washington, John Adams, George Clinton, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay and Rufus King.
By the mid-1790s Trumbull put painting aside to focus on politics and diplomacy. In 1794 he served as secretary to John Jay during the treaty negotiations between America and Britain. He was chosen in 1796 to be the fifth commissioner to work on the 7th article of the Jay Treaty, which sought to resolve the complaints made by American merchants who believed their ships had been unfairly confiscated by the British. In 1800 he married Sarah Hope Harvey, an Englishwoman, and returned to America with her in 1804. After spending a few years in New York, he returned to London for another extended stay that lasted from 1808-13.
Trumbull returned to painting in 1816 as president of the American Academy of the Fine Arts. However, by that point his skills had declined due to lack of practice for so many years. Trumbull continued to support the Fine Arts by drafting a document, Plan for Encouragement of the Arts, that sought to promote the Arts to the President and Congress. He passed away in 1843 at the age of 88.

Vaughan, John, 1755-1841. Papers, 1768 - ca. 1936
Title:
John Vaughan papers, 1768 - Circa 1936
The collection of about 850 items covers the period from 1782 to c. 1936, with the bulk dating to the 1780s to 1840s. The collection is divided into four series. Series I contains correspondence relating to a wide variety of topics, including French and English politics, business, trade, religious matters, and personal affairs. Many of the items are letters of introduction. There is also information on John Vaughan’s immigration to America, Joseph Priestley, vaccines and inoculation (with Jefferson's comments on the same), Vaughan's business in Philadelphia, and the American Philosophical Society. Also included in this series are 2 boxes with copies of Vaughan correspondence as well as miscellaneous notes by E. W. Madeira, gathered in the course of his research on Vaughan in the 1930s. Series II consists of three volumes. Included are two of Vaughan's commonplace books. One, entitled, "J. Vaughan's book," May 17, 1779 (47 pp., in Latin; 870/L34), includes mostly Latin notations. The other commonplace book, dated 1783 (ca. 66 pp.; B V 462.c), includes comments on several prominent Americans, such as Benjamin Rush and David Rittenhouse, as well as American society generally. The third volume is a copybook with thirty letters spanning the period 1784 to 1801 (B V462.1). Series III includes material relating to Vaughan's administration of the estate of the Philadelphia merchant Samuel Merrick, 1796-1822 (Vaughan-Merrick Papers, B V462.m; 2 boxes). Series IV consists of correspondence between Vaughan and the DuPont Co. for which he served as agent (B V462.4; photocopies of 73 letters).

Trumbull, John, 1756-1843. Papers, 1790-1843.
Title:
Papers, 1790-1843.
Papers, 1790-1824, containing inventories, letter books, account books, and miscellaneous notes. One volume contains inventories of his engravings and his personal and household possessions, as packed in cases for shipment across the Atlantic in 1803, 1808, and 1813. The same volume contains results of his experiments with colors and paints, and formulas for making paints and varnishes, as well as reciptes for medicines and household cleaning substances. Another volume contains three small account books, two dealing with subscriptions for engravings made from his paintings, the third with proceeds and expenses of the exhibition in 1824 of his painting, the Resignation of General Washington, in various cities in the northeastern United States. A third volume contains accounts, letters and memoranda relating to the management of his lands in the Mount Morris tract of Genesee County (N.Y.). Many of the letters are written to James Wadsworth and Samuel M. Hopkins, apparently his agents there, and include instructions on the rental and management of the land; one letter contains an inventory of a shipment of fruit trees and ornamental trees for planting there, enumerating the different varieties. The volume also includes a narrative, dated 1805, of a subscription taken up to improve the road to Dr. Samuel Willard's house at Stafford Springs (Conn.), and accounts of expenditure on the work done. Some related papers are laid in to this volume. There are also two letter books, 1796-1802, and 1810-1817. The earlier volume deals mostly with his work as commissioner charged with settling the 7th article, relating to American claims, of the Jay treaty between the U.S. and Great Britain, although some letters include general discussions of politics and of his business affairs. Correspondents include Oliver Wolcott, John Jay, Rufus King, and his brother Jonathan Trumbull. The second volume includes 16 letters to Rufus King. Most of the letters in the later volume were written during 1811-1813, when Trumbull was in England. Many of them give his views on the War of 1812, particularly the impressment issue, including one to the Prime Minister, Spencer Perceval, another to Sir Robert Liston, and one which was published in the Morning Post. Other letters deal with business and personal affairs, including his detention in Britain as an enemy alien, and the career in the British Army of his natural son, John Trumbull Ray. There are also letters discussing American politics, and a strong attack on DeWitt Clinton. A list of correspondents accompanies the volume.

New Haven Colony Historical Society. New Haven Historical Society collection of documents, 1729-1857.
Title:
New Haven Historical Society collection of documents, 1729-1857.
The collection consists of a variety of documents removed from the collections of the New Haven Colony Historical Society because they lacked any connection to New Haven, Connecticut. The documents include correspondence, deeds, bonds, writs, summons, estate records, military commissions, and proprietors' records. The earliest documents are the proprietors' records which lay out the lands of Windsor, 1729, and the area west of Farmington and Simsbury, 1733. Within the correspondence are letters written to Daniel Sheldon of Litchfield, Connecticut, about the Revolutionary War battle at Kingsbury and the occupation of Washington by the British in 1814. Among his correspondents was Uriah Tracy. Another body of correspondence was written to Charles Sherry of Norwalk, Connecticut, 1836-1844, from his brother MRS. The Brown family of Stonington, Connecticut, is well represented in the collection with estate records, distribution of property, deeds, financial records and receipts for shares in the Groton & Stonington Turnpike, 1827. Brown family members include Ichabod (several generations), Elias, Palmer and Nelson. Another body of records relate to the town of Huntington, Connecticut, and Samuel P. Mills of the same town. There are bonds, writs, land records including plot plans, and tax documents, 1811-1833. Similar materials exist for the Sanford family of Redding, Connecticut, specifically Lemuel, Jonathan R. and Thomas. Within their papers are three tickets to P.T. Barnum's Museum. Of particular interest is a pamphlet entitled "Heads of Inquiry relative to the present state and condition of . . . Connecticut", 1775, presented to Colonel John Trumbull by President John Adams, through the person of Josiah Quincy. Inside the pamphlet and affixed to the front cover is a receipt noting that Jeremiah Wadsworth purchased two prints by John Trumbull in 1788. The prints were the Battle of Bunker's Hill and the Death of General Montgomery. Filed under D for Danforth is a bill of sale for pewter, 1814, sold by Samuel Danforth.

Title:
Papers, 1776-1795 (bulk 1776-1783).
Papers, 1776-1795. Most of the material dates from 1776-1783, when Stewart served as aide to General Horatio Gates and was a colonel in the 13th Pennsylvania Regiment. There are a few musters and returns of inspection, but most of the papers consist of letters to and from Stewart. Many of them are concerned with military business, especially his efforts to get cannon and ordnance for the Northern Army early in the war, but there are also some personal letters, including several from his sister, Martha Boyd, giving him news of family and friends in Ireland. Two letters deal with his attempts to get James Murray, a cousin who was a lieutenant in the British Army, included in an exchange of prisoners. The collection includes letters from John Trumbull, Joseph Brown, George Weedon, Benjamin Bartlett, Anthony Wayne, William Alexander (Lord Stirling), Horatio Gates, and others.

Cogdell, John S. (John Stevens), 1778-1847. Diaries and letter books, 1808-1841.
Title:
Diaries and letter books, 1808-1841.
Consists of six volumes that document Cogdell's travels and artistic endeavors in 1808, 1816, 1825, and from 1829 to 1841. The first volume opens with Cogdell's expenses for a trip from Philadelphia to New York. The narrative portion of the notebook offers vignettes of life in the early 19th century. He relays his impressions of the Peale Museum, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He visited the Bettering House Hospital, later called the Pennsylvania Hospital, and toured a prison. He dined and otherwise socialized with many prominent Philadelphians during his stay. On Sept. 8, he traveled through New Jersey to New York City. He visited the panorama of Edward Savage. He was most impressed by St. John's Church in New York City. This manuscript also features wash drawings of people in ancient costumes and various poses, pencil sketches of buildings and landscapes, and formulae for various artists' preparations. The second volume is a letterbook containing a series of letters addressed to "Dear Friend" that describe a trip to Philadelphia and New York in 1816. Cogdell begins each letter with notes about the place from which he is writing. He offers comments on the Quaker community and area museums. He wrote a great deal about the work and methods of Thomas Sully. Cogdell provides depictions of the use of stoves and sketches of local scenery and some of Sully's works. The third volume is also from 1816 and was also kept in the form of letters to a friend. In it, Cogdell describes a trip up the Hudson, on to Lake George, to Boston, New Haven, Trenton, Baltimore, and ending in Raleigh, N.C. He discusses Trumbell's work at great length. The manuscript also features pencil and pen and ink sketches that correspond to places and scenes represented in the text. Scenes from Fishkill and West Point are identified. The next volume begins in 1825 with another trip north from Charleston. In Boston, Cogdell met with artists Gilbert Stuart, Washington Allston, Jonathan Mason, and Francis Alexander. He commented on the work and private collections of each of these men. In Philadelphia, he again visited the Pennsylvania Academy and remarked on the work of Benjamin West, Charles B. Lawrence, Rembrandt Peale, and John Neagle. The final two volumes (1829-1841) are labeled "Modelling and Sculpture" and contain long descriptions of Cogdell's methods of modeling, sculpting, and painting. The first opens with correspondence relating to the creation of a bust to memorialize the recently deceased bishop, Right Reverend Theodore Dehon, and its success with the public. Other correspondence pertains to sculptures and paintings commissioned and advice from Washington Allston. Drawings of sculpting instruments are also featured.

John Davis Hatch papers
Title:
John Davis Hatch papers
The papers of art historian, collector, educator, and museum administrator John Davis Hatch measure 24.9 linear feet and date from 1790-1995. Within the papers are biographical materials; correspondence; personal business and legal documents; diaries; research, organization and teaching files; writings; printed materials; photographs; and works of art (mostly sketches) by American artists. Research files regarding artists and specific subjects comprise the bulk of this collection. Scattered biographical materials include an invitation to the Hatch's anniversary party in 1964, short biographical sketches and resumes, certificates, report cards, a silhouette of the Hatch Family circa 1904, and a typecript of a diary written by Olivia Hatch as a child. Correspondence includes professional correspondence between Hatch and colleagues; letters from family and friends; and some materials regarding exhibitions from the Hatch Collection. The bulk of correspondence spans Hatch's professional career although there are scattered letters from 1915-1943 from Hatch to his parents. Also found are letters addressed to an unidentified "Henry." Correspondence is also found in the research files. Personal business and financial records consist of inventories, bills, receipts, and other records for artworks purchased, loaned, or donated by Hatch. Also found are records from the J. D. Hatch Associates Cultural Consultants, a draft of Hatch's will, stock and tax materials, and travel papers and passports. Scattered diaries and journal fragments and a transcript date from 1925-1965. Thirteen "Daily Reflection Journals" date from 1975-1987. Research files on artists and subjects are extensive, comprising one-half of the collection. Files are varied and may include primary research materials, correspondence, printed materials, notes, and writings. Some of the artists' letters and other materials dated from 1790-early 1800s may have been purchased by Hatch. Among many other items, there is an illustrated letter written by Oscar Bluemner and photographs of Bluemner; primary research materials dating from the early 1800s on John Vanderlyn including a will, receipts, and correspondence; a letter from Rembrandt Peale dated 1830, and an autograph letter from John Trumbull dated 1790. Also found is an index card file.Organization files contain files and records related to Hatch's affiliations with many cultural organizations. A small amount of teaching and education files consist of Hatch's notes and lectures from the University of Oregon and the University of Massachusetts, and from his continuing education courses he took at St. John's College. Writings and notes include short essays by Hatch, mostly concerning art, exhibitions and museum administration; book reviews; general notes, lists, and reports. Printed Materials are comprised of exhibition catalogs and announcements, including those from the American Drawing Annual in the 1940s-1950s; printed articles annotated by Hatch; clippings; pricelists; and published works.A small number of photographs are of Hatch, some by Dorothy Frazer; of his family and friends; and of artists. The bulk of the photographs are of works of art including those owned by Hatch.Artwork includes two sketchbooks - one by Kenneth Callahan and another by Lloyd McNeill; and additional drawings and sketches by Julian Scott, Henry Kirke Browne, Kenneth Callahan, Ezra Clark, John Cranch, Jasper Francis Crospey, F. O. C. Darley, C. H. Granger, Seymour J. Guy, George Harvey, Edward Lamson Henry, Henry Inman, as well as unsigned or illegible names.

Hooker, Roger, 1751-1830. Orderly books, 1775.
Title:
Orderly books, 1775.
Manuscripts, in multiple hands, of a collection of over a hundred military orders issued during the American Revolutionary War, primarily during the year 1775. The volumes include orders by General George Washington, Major General Joseph Spencer, General Artemas Ward, and John Trumbull. The majority of the orders address administrative issues, such as establishing procedures for granting furlough; assigning colored ribbons to distinguish military ranks; and instituting twice-weekly inspections of soldiers' arms. Other orders concern military discipline; one order forbids soldiers to bathe in the Bridge at Cambridge, MA, when pedestrians, especially ladies, are present; another from August 4, 1775 declares that any soldier who fires guns in and about the camp when no enemy is in sight will be considered as a common enemy and authorizes guards to fire on them as such. Many orders also contain summaries of court-martials and their verdicts and punishments, including 30 lashes for a soldier who had abused the camp doctor; riding the "wooden horse" for 30 minutes for a soldier who was insolent towards his captain; and being put into a horse cart with a rope around his neck and drummed out of the army for a soldier who had behaved disrespectfully toward the Continental Association by drinking to General Thomas Gage's health. Many orders in the first volume are also copied in the second volume. The first volume also includes daily personnel charts of men fit for service, as well as several dozen personal journal entries on the events of the day. These entries record the troops' marches, the weather, reports of battles, as well as descriptions of Hooker's own troops' military engagements. On June 17, 1775, he records the activities of the army at Bunker's Hill. On July 5, 1775, he records a visit by Generals Washington and Lee; elsewhere, he notes skirmishes around Boston Harbor; casualties; and deserters. All but the last two entries in the first volume are from 1775; the last two are dated 1834, and consist of a copy of a letter to the editor by Thomas Cowles on the successful crops in American south, and a copy of a letter from John Jay Jr., Thomas Porter, and Thomas Cowles of the Antimasonic Party in defense of the Constitution.

Title:
Letter, 1822 November 28, Litchfield, Conn., to John Sanderson, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Has a portrait of his father, Oliver Wolcott, painted by Ralph Earl, from which Laura Gibbs made a copy which was sent to Joseph Delaplaine in 1819. Suggests Sanderson have an engraving made from this copy. The study of Oliver Wolcott made by John Trumbull also contains a good representation.
