Williams was born Mar. 2, 1879 to John Dockray and Alam (Davis) Williams in Marengo, Iowa. He graduated from Grinnell College (Ph.B., 1901), University of Nebraska (M.A., 1903), and Columbia University (Ph.D., 1906). He taught physics at Barnard College (1906-1907), Oberlin College (1908-1924) and Amherst College (1924-1947). He died Feb. 19, 1955 in Hartford, Ct.
