Studies for the painting "Sortie made by the Garrison of Gibraltar in Nov. 1781", 1789.

A series of twelve studies in pencil, pen and ink, and wash, with one sketch for the top ornament of the frame, one sketch of the picture in its frame, and a sketch of the head of Sir Thomas Lawrence, who was used as the model for the dying Spanish commander. The painting depicts an incident in the siege of Gibraltar, when the Spanish attempted to retake the rock from the British. Also included is Trumbull's history of the painting (N.Y. 1828 Oct. 1), a letter of transmittal to Athenaeum president Josiah Quincy (1828 Sept. 30), and a 4 p. prospectus, "Reference and description of the print, representing the Sortie made by the Garrison of Gibraltar in Nov. 1781, engraved by Mr. Sharp ..."
