Papers, 1935-1956.

The collection consists of three boxes of material compiled by Stephen DeWitt Stephens for his biography of Peter Maverick. There are copies of letters which Stephens recorded and copies of his original notes, much of which was "condensed rather than specifically stated in the biography." Stephens corresponded extensively with Maverick descendants and scholarly institutions to unearth material on all the Mavericks, their engravings and lithographs, and Peter's stormy partnership with Asher Brown Durand (1796-1886), well-known engraver and painter.

3 boxes.
