The Index of American Design was a project of the research division of the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration which produced approximately 20,000 reproductions (photographs and original drawings) and classifications of a wide variety of American art, paintings, sculptures, handicrafts, and folk art.
Founded in 1891, through the bequest of Elizabeth Perkins Fogg, in memory of her husband, William Hayes Fogg, the Fogg Art Museum opened in 1895 in a building designed especially for it by Richard Morris Hunt. In 1927 the Fogg moved to its present building at 32 Quincy Street, Cambridge, which was designed by the Boston architectural firm of Coolidge, Shepley, Bulfinch, and Abbott to be one of the most advanced museum facilities of its time. The Fogg is a teaching museum, used by the students of Harvard University. It has one of the most extensive university art collections in the world.

Rathbone, Perry Townsend, 1911-2000. Papers. 1929-1933.
Title:
Papers. 1929-1933.
The Rathbone papers date from the art historian's undergraduate years (1929-33), though the papers are not dated. The collection includes artistic works (graphite and pen and ink drawings, watercolors, and a small gilded panel), a leather notebook cover and its accompanying research, or study, notes and is arranged by type. Artistic works are arranged by the Fine Arts (F.A.) class for which they were created (eg. F.A. 2a, F.A. 3c, etc.). It should be noted that "Section 2" is a title derived from the works themselves, and thus it is unclear which specific Fine Arts course number they were created for. The notes remain in original order. All the material is in good condition and has been housed in acid free folders.

There was a recital by Rudolf Serkin in 1973 in honor of the opening of the museum's auditorium. Events were held for visitors such as King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, Prime Minister Pearson of Canada, Frank Capra, and Lady Bird Johnson. There are no records for 1981-1982 or 1958-1960.

Title:
Curatorial Office Records of Charles Cunningham, 1973-1977.
Born in 1910 in Mamaroneck, NY, Charles C. Cunningham attended Harvard and became a curator at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 1935. From 1941 to 1966 he was the director of Hartford's Wadsworth Atheneum. He went on to become director of the Art Institute of Chicago until he retired from this position in 1972. George Heard Hamilton, then director of the Clark, invited Cunningham to become chief curator. Cunningham was responsible for two major exhibits at the Clark, The Elegant Academics in 1974 and Jongkind and the Pre-Impressionists: The Painters of the Ecole Saint-Simeon in 1976. He also initiated the Conservation Laboratory, which opened in 1977. Cunningham retired from the Clark that year and died in 1979. The Curatorial Office Records of Charles C. Cunningham primarily contain correspondence about potential museum acquisitions and discussions of loans with staff at other museums. Due to his long and respected career, Cunningham had many acquaintances and close friends among curators and directors at other art institutions, as well as among art historians and dealers. The correspondence in these records includes numerous exchanges about intellectual and business concerns in the art world. The high esteem and affection his peers felt for him is evidenced in letters that blur the line between professional and personal. Other materials in this series include: class lists and grades, assignments, and correspondence with students from several courses taught by Cunningham; CAI memoranda; and financial records about costs of exhibits and loans.

Title:
Director's Office Records, 1955-1977.
The Director's Office records 1955-1977 are comprised almost entirely of business correspondence between the Director of the museum and other people and institutions though other records, such as receipts and publications, are occasionally present. During this nascent phase of the museum the Director's Office handled almost all aspects of business and consequently these files reflect a wide spectrum of museum concerns including publicity, acquisitions, finances, staff hiring, construction, and expansion of the museum. Some files are devoted to individuals and institutions while others are labelled with subjects such as Inquiries, Acquisitions, and Employment. The subject headings and content of the materials remains quite consistent throughout the years, even through the tenures of different Directors.

Keller, Carl Tilden, 1872-1955,. Carl Tilden Keller collection concerning Sir Aurel Stein, 1922-1945.
Title:
Carl Tilden Keller collection concerning Sir Aurel Stein, 1922-1945.
Papers include correspondence between Keller and Stein and among Keller's circle of friends who were scholars or patrons also interested in Stein's archaeological expeditions. Some correspondence pertains to Stein's 1929 series of lectures given at the Lowell Institute. In January of 1930, Harvard University (cooperatively via Harvard's Fogg Art Museum and the Harvard Yenching Institute) agreed to financially back Stein as an independent contractor for his explorations into Chinese Turkestan (Central Asia). They also agreed to allow the cooperation of the British Museum. Series II of this collection reflects Harvard's involvement with Stein and also includes Stein's correspondence with British, Chinese, and American officials, related to Stein's political situation in China. There is correspondence between Keller and other Bostonians connected to Harvard, especially including Paul J. (Paul Joseph) Sachs. There are copies of official reports, telegrams, payroll records, and memorandum that detail the events that led to Stein abandoning his expedition in Chinese Turkestan (Central Asia). Included are financial records related to costs of the expedition and information regarding Harvard funding, as well as clippings and reprints by and about Stein. Many of Stein's autograph letters are poor, faint, and fragile carbon copies, and many documents and letters of others are not original, but are typescript, and occasionally manuscript, transcripts.

Homer, William Innes. Papers, 1953-1960 (inclusive).
Title:
Papers, 1953-1960 (inclusive).
The Homer papers date from 1953 to 1960 and include his lecture and research notes. Also included are materials relating to the 1955 Henri Matisse exhibition that Homer helped organize at Harvard University's Busch-Reisinger Museum. The collection contains lecture notes taken in various classes in the Fine Arts Department at Harvard University: Fine Arts 200 Criticism, Interpretation and Research taught by Professor Jakob Rosenberg, Fine Arts 197 American Art taught by Professor Benjamin Rowland, Fine Arts 275 American Seminar also taught by Professor Rowland and FineArts 277 Seminar on Color Theory taught by Professor Richard F. Brown. Homer made marginal illustrations throughout the notes both related and unrelated to the content of the notes themselves. Illustrations related to the notes include those of buildings at the University of Virginia and of women in the paintings of John Vanderlyn. Most of the unrelated illustrations are of human faces. Also included in this series is the syllabus for Fine Arts 197 and correspondence regarding research on the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, dated 1955. Series II, Matisse Exhibition (1955), contains materials relating to the Matisse Exhibition at Harvard's Busch-Reisinger Museum. The exhibition was produced by students, including Homer, in a museum training course under the guidance of Professor Charles L. Kuhn and focused on the work of Henri Matisse, who had died the previous year. Included are press releases, advertisements, fliers, newspaper clippings, and an invitation. The series also contains photographs of both the interior and exterior of the Busch-Reisinger Museum at the time of the exhibition, including one photograph of William Homer himself. Series III, Research Notes (1959-1960), consists of Homer's notes pertaining to his doctoral dissertation on the subject of Georges Pierre Seurat's color theory.

Myron Bement Smith collection, circa 1910-1970
Title:
Myron Bement Smith collection
The Myron Bement Smith collection consists of two parts, the papers of Myron Bement Smith and his wife Katharine and the Islamic Archives. It contains substantial material about his field research in Italy in the 1920s and his years working on Islamic architecture in Iran in the 1930s. Letters describe the milieu in which he operated in Rochester NY and New York City in the 1920s and early 1930s; the Smiths' life in Iran from 1933 to 1937; and the extensive network of academic and social contacts that Myron and Katharine developed and maintained over his lifetime. The Islamic Archives was a project to which Smith devoted most of his professional life. It includes both original materials, such as his photographs and notes, and items acquired by him from other scholars or experts on Islamic art and architecture. Smith intended the Archives to serve as a resource for scholars interested in the architecture and art of the entire Islamic world although he also included some materials about non-Islamic architecture.
