Marianna Shreve Simpson received the PhD in fine art from Harvard University in 1978. She has worked as the Curator of Islamic Near Eastern Art at the Freer/Sackler Galleries, Smithsonian Institution and as Director of Curatorial Affairs and Curator of Islamic Art at the Walters Art Museum. She has focused especially on illustrated Persian manuscripts, and has lectured and taught widely. She is the author of: The Illustration of an Epic: the Earliest Shahnama Manuscripts (1979), Sultan Ibrahim Mirza's Haft Awrang: A Princely Manuscript from Sixteenth-Century Iran (1997) and Persian Poetry, Painting and Patronage: Illustrations in a Sixteenth-Century Masterpiece (1998).
